Valderoure combines a striking landscape with traces of history and a multi-day hiking option. The village stretches along the green plain of the Lane, dotted with small hamlets. At the same time, Valderoure lies against a prominent cliff face, with old houses lined up above a broad meadow. This makes it possible to plan your stay from two perspectives: with time for heritage or with a longer hike through the plain. The cliff face provides a contrast to the green plain.

Historical Traces from Different Periods

The Chapelle Saint-Léonce was built in the Middle Ages as part of the Priory of Lérins; it was listed as a historic monument by decree on September 10, 1947. Pugnefort was a fortified settlement mentioned in 1207. The remains of Pugnefort Castle are on a small platform 500 meters northwest of the hamlet of La Ferrière. Another historical chapter is represented by the former fortified house of Valderoure in the Malamaire district. Built in the 13th century, it protected its residents and their possessions in the Middle Ages.

Near the former Chapelle Saint-Léonce at Valentin is a Roman sarcophagus. The stonemason Étienne Rebuffel built a limestone oratory in honor of the “Mobiles” and those mobilized in 1870. The historical traces thus range from Roman remains and medieval buildings to a memorial. These examples represent different themes: religious history, fortified settlements and houses, and remembrance of those mobilized in 1870.

Hiking Through the Plain of the Lane

The Grand Tour du Haut-Estéron is a five-day circular hiking route, making it a multi-day option for planning your trip. The route crosses the Lane, passes through the plain of Valderoure, and then reaches Valderoure. It thus leads from the river crossing through the landscape of the plain to the destination. Unlike the individual historical landmarks, the focus here is on a hike lasting several days. Seasonal conditions can vary; check them before planning your trip.

Agricultural Products from Valderoure

Local production also gives the village its own character. Ferme Chapot-Maillard produces veal and beef as well as beef salami from organically raised Salers cattle. La Storia produces organic high-altitude beers from organic barley grown on the land of Ferme Chapot-Maillard. The range of beers may change. Meat, salami, and beer add an agricultural perspective to the historical and landscape themes.

If you are looking for a hotel in Valderoure, first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: the heritage, the five-day circular hiking route, or local production.
