Entraunes brings together very different natural and cultural features: trails pass through forests, alongside waterways and marshland, while churches and chapels tell stories of several phases of construction. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the specific routes and their starting points distinct—from the Nordic centre near Estenc to the Sanguinière car park.
Hiking landscapes around Estenc
The Roche Grande integral nature reserve has been within the municipality of Entraunes and the Mercantour National Park since 4 September 2021. Its 481 hectares consist mainly of meadows, cliffs and scree slopes, as well as a few stands of Swiss stone pine and larch. Important for planning: public access to the reserve is strictly prohibited without prior authorisation from the national park director. Exceptions apply to scientific work and to educational and communication activities provided for in the management plan.
One specifically described circular hike is the moderately difficult Petit circuit du vallon de Gorgias. It starts at the Sanguinière car park, is 4.98 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 275 metres. The trail passes through a forest of larch, Swiss stone pine and mountain pine. Rhododendrons and blueberries grow in the undergrowth, and the black grouse feeds on their berries.
The Tour du plateau d’Estenc leads to the source of the Var, passes a small artificial lake and the Sanguinière stream, and goes through a larch forest. The Vallon de l’Estrop hike starts and ends in the hamlet of Estenc in Entraunes. It crosses a large grassy upland pasture valley shaped by erosion and passes marshland. The landscapes described therefore differ: the Tour du plateau focuses on forest and water, while the Vallon de l’Estrop features an open upland pasture valley and marshland.
Winter trails and the end of the road
The Estenc Nordic centre is located on the Estenc Plateau at an altitude of between 1,780 and 1,850 metres. It has three regularly groomed routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. One specific loop is the Pra-long Nordic circuit near Estenc: it is 1.8 kilometres long, marked green and intended for beginners.
Road information near Estenc is also useful for planning: the Refuge de la Cantonnière is accessible by car all year round. In winter, the D2202 ends there, as it is not cleared any further.
The Clue du Chaudan
The Clue du Chaudan is a short, water-filled gorge with jumps, slides and usually deep pools. It ends at a 30-metre-high waterfall, which can be descended via two consecutive abseils. The approach starts at the car park below the village: walk a few metres further downhill along the road to the GR52a.
Discover churches and chapels
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité church combines an asymmetrical fortified bell tower with an apse whose origins date back to the 13th century. Inside, it houses several works by Jean André de Castellane, including four officially authenticated works.
The chapels also reveal different traces of history. The Chapelle Saint Sébastien et Saint Roch lies at the foot of the road to the Col de la Cayolle and was built around 1500–1515. It has original frescoes by Andréa de Cella and has been protected as a historic monument since 1947. The Chapelle de la Sainte-Trinité in Estenc was built in 1555, dismantled in 1947 and rebuilt at its current location.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Grâces in Entraunes-Estenc dates from 1722–1723. It preserves wall paintings, religious objects and numerous high-quality woodworks. Visitors to sacred buildings will find not just individual dates, but also different forms of decoration and building history.
