The Citadel of Sisteron overlooks the Durance Valley on the border between the Alps and Provence. A visit combines outdoor areas with views of the city with a museum, halls, a film, a chapel, a boutique and a rampart walk. If a particular part of the tour is important to you, check the latest information in advance: individual facilities may change. The seasonal tourist train runs from the tourist office through Sisteron to the entrance to the citadel; check the timetable before planning your visit.

Citadel, rock and Durance

The Rocher de la Baume is also regarded as a geological and historical landmark. It offers panoramic views and displays distinctive rock formations. The Clue de Sisteron reveals another aspect of the landscape: in this narrow passage, the Durance has carved a path between the Rocher de la Baume and the citadel. In Sisteron, striking rock formations and the river’s impact on the landscape can thus be seen side by side.

City history and collections

Construction of Notre-Dame et Saint-Thyrse Cathedral began in the 12th century, and it has been classified as a Monument historique since 1840. The Chapelle Saint-Domnin, also dating from the 12th century, lies on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The two buildings offer different points of interest: the cathedral, with its long construction history, and the chapel, with its connection to the pilgrimage route.

The exhibition at the Musée Édith-Robert – Musée Terre et Temps is housed in the former chapel of the 17th-century Visitation convent. Exhibits include a Foucault pendulum, water clocks and sundials. The Musée Gallo-Romain dedicates its permanent exhibition to Gallo-Roman burial practices and funerary rites. It also features an exceptional collection from the mausoleum of a wealthy Gallo-Roman family who lived in Sisteron during the Roman imperial period.

Those interested in everyday life in the Pays sisteronais will find a different perspective at the Écomusée: its permanent collection includes everyday objects, craft items, records of former occupations and agricultural tools documenting local customs. The museum also presents a new temporary exhibition every year. The collections thus range from ancient burial practices to objects from everyday life in the region.

Market and Provençal cuisine

The Provençal market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in Place de l’Horloge and Place Paul-Arène in the historic center. Local produce and regional specialties are on offer. Check the market days and current arrangements before your visit. One of the area’s culinary specialties is Agneau de Sisteron. Traditional preparations include a leg of lamb slow-cooked for seven hours, grilled lamb chops, roast saddle of lamb, and Pieds et paquets. Availability depends on the season and the vendor.

Activities for different interests

For an independent exploration of the city, try the treasure hunt “Chasse au Trésor: La cité de la peur”: this self-guided puzzle leads you through Sisteron with clues and ends with a treasure. Check the latest information about how it operates before your trip. Sisteron Aventures is in the city center at the foot of the citadel. The main site has six courses, plus a separate “Extrême” course; check current opening hours before your visit.

At Plan d’eau des Marres, there is a fitness trail, an enclosed beach volleyball court, a fitness area and a multisport court. Canoe trips on the Durance, which are offered as far as Sisteron, are a separate activity. The stretch of the middle Durance between the Serre-Ponçon dam and Sisteron is calmer. As this water activity depends on the season and the operator, check the current arrangements before planning.

The Trou de l’Argent route passes at an altitude of 1,050 meters through a cave equipped with cables and metal rungs, as well as along exposed sections. It is for experienced, well-equipped hikers; check safety conditions before setting out. The options therefore vary considerably: from a puzzle game through the city and facilities at Plan d’eau to a challenging route in the countryside.
