Naintré offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: architectural history at the Château de la Tour-de-Naintré, exotic trees at the Arboretum de la Coulée Verte, a several-hour hike on the Baudiment Circuit n°36, and blacksmithing courses and guided tours at La Forge des Berthons. The activities differ not only in theme: the arboretum can be visited independently, while guided tours at the forge require an appointment in advance. These considerations of time and organisation can help you plan your stay around your own interests.

Château de la Tour-de-Naintré: Building phases and heritage protection

The main building phases of the Château de la Tour-de-Naintré took place in the last quarter of the 14th century and in the 16th century. These are two distinct periods in the building’s history, not a single date for the Château as a whole. Since 12 July 1973, the façades and roofs, the moats, and the dovecote have been protected as historic monuments by decree. This date refers to the protection status, not the building’s age. For a cultural and historical perspective, it is worth distinguishing between the two: the building phases describe when it was built, while the protection order identifies specific parts of the Château.

Arboretum de la Coulée Verte

The Arboretum de la Coulée Verte is home to more than a hundred exotic trees, selected for their botanical or aesthetic interest. Botanical interest focuses on the plants themselves, while aesthetic interest concerns their effect on the overall landscape. You can visit independently and tailor your exploration to your own interests. The plantings may change over time, so the collection should not be considered unchanging.

Baudiment Circuit n°36

The Baudiment Circuit n°36 is an 11 km circular hiking trail that takes three hours; it starts and ends in Naintré. The trailhead is the car park in front of the cemetery and school, at the junction of avenue Jean Jaurès and rue Jacques Duclos. The two figures answer different planning questions: the distance gives the length of the loop, while the time indicates the expected duration. Check local signage before setting out, as local conditions may change.

Blacksmithing at La Forge des Berthons

Guided tours at La Forge des Berthons are available by appointment only. Be sure to include an appointment in your plans. Blacksmithing courses are also offered at three levels, from beginner to experienced. These levels provide guidance based on experience; course availability may vary, so confirm it in advance.

Plan around time and appointments

Different time commitments can be combined in your day’s plans: you can visit the arboretum independently, the circular trail is 11 km long and takes three hours, and guided tours at La Forge require an appointment. If you want to fit in several activities, first allow time for the trail and book a guided tour in advance; you can add an independent visit to the arboretum.
