In Iteuil, hiking trails with specific time estimates sit alongside a layered château history; springs and washhouses are also features of the local landscape. To plan your visit, you can start by comparing the walking times for the described routes. The buildings also offer insights into different historical periods.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
The route details available on the municipal tourism website in 2026 list the Sentier des Sources as 9.5 km long, with a stated duration of two hours. The Sentier Prés des Champs is 7 km and takes one hour and 30 minutes. The Sentier des Sources is therefore 2.5 km longer; its stated duration is also half an hour longer than that of the shorter trail. If you plan your day around the stated walking times, there is a clear difference between the two routes.
The Sentier des Sources runs through Iteuil. Numerous springs cross the area, and many washhouses were built along their banks. The Sentier d’Aigne offers a view of the Château d’Aigne, which overlooks the valley from a wooded setting. A revered oak stands in the forests of Chêne-Brault and is associated with the Sentier des Genèbres. The trails thus highlight different landscape features: springs and washhouses in Iteuil, the château and valley views from the Sentier d’Aigne, and the oak associated with the Sentier des Genèbres.
Château History and Heritage Protection
At La Troussaye, it is helpful to distinguish early settlement from the building history of the present château. The site was already occupied by a Roman villa in the 3rd century. The present Château de la Troussaye was built on the site of a former manor farm. M. Henri de Montjou added the left wing in 1891; the château has been fully restored since 2012. Roman settlement belongs to the early history of the site, while the manor farm, addition and restoration describe later stages in the château’s history.
The Château d’Aigne was built in 1442 by Jean II de Vivonne on the site of a Roman villa. Its entrance portal dates from the 17th century and was listed as a historic monument by decree dated December 12, 1975. At the Château de Bernay, heritage protection covers the entire château, as well as the remains of the chapel to the south and the outbuildings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries. The protection order is dated July 3, 1992. The stated areas of protection therefore differ: at Aigne, the focus is on the historic entrance portal; at Bernay, it is the entire château together with the chapel remains and outbuildings.
