Two cultural and historical highlights await you during a stay in Couhé: the Halles de Couhé, with their architectural history and weekly market, and the Abbaye de Valence, with its monastic origins. A Tèrra-Aventura trail adds a digital discovery experience to this selection. You can plan your visit around architecture, the market or the abbey’s history.

Halles de Couhé: Architecture and weekly market

The Halles de Couhé were built in 1580 and rest on 56 octagonal pillars. Octagonal means that each pillar has eight sides. The year of construction, the number of pillars and their shape give you three different points of reference for viewing the hall: the date places the building in time, while the number and shape of the pillars identify a specific architectural feature. The Halles also host a weekly market. Architecture and the market are therefore two distinct reasons to include the Halles in your plans.

The Halles can be visited without a guide. If you want to visit the market, check the current date in advance.

Abbaye de Valence: Founding and heritage protection

The Abbaye de Valence was founded in 1230 by Hugues X de Lusignan as a daughter abbey of Clairvaux Abbey. This form of foundation highlights the historical connection with Clairvaux. Some of the surviving buildings were listed or classified as historic monuments between 1997 and 1999. The dates 1997 to 1999 therefore refer to the later protection of some of the surviving buildings, not to the abbey’s founding. This allows you to consider the abbey’s origins and the preservation of individual buildings as distinct historical aspects.

The Abbaye can be visited without a guide; guided tours are available only by prior appointment. If you are planning a guided tour, arrange it in advance and check the current visiting conditions, as access arrangements may change.

Which cultural highlight suits your plans?

The choice comes down to a simple question: Would you like to focus on architectural design and the weekly market, or on the Abbaye’s founding history and its connection with Clairvaux? The type of visit may also influence your choice: the Halles can be visited without a guide, while guided tours of the Abbaye require a prior appointment. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests.
