The Bandiat Valley runs through Pranzac from south to north. The town’s history includes the remains of the former fortress of the lords of Pranzac, the Église Saint-Cybard and the Maison du Patrimoine. Outdoors, two connected circular trails complement the cultural focus with landscapes: the Parc trail runs along a former seigneurial park, while the valley trail passes through the Bandiat Valley. This lets you explore historic structures and features of the trails as different focuses for your stay.
Local History and Cultural Heritage
The remains of the former fortress of the lords of Pranzac are in the town centre. The surviving sections include two round towers and a curtain wall with loopholes. The 13th-century lantern of the dead stands above the former cemetery, which is now used as a square. Pranzac thus brings together traces of its former fortifications and a place whose use has changed over the centuries.
The Maison du Patrimoine provides information about Pranzac’s local history and the town’s medieval and Renaissance heritage. One room presents the Bandiat Valley in the Charente department and its 17 mills. A vaulted room focuses on the karst area, stone quarrying and the use of stone over the centuries. The subjects covered therefore range from local history to the landscape and the use of stone in crafts.
Construction of the Église Saint-Cybard de Pranzac began in the 12th century, during the Romanesque period, and the church was extended in the 16th century. Its Renaissance chapel was built in 1520; notable pendant keystones in the chapel are listed in the register of historic monuments. The church also houses an Italian organ built in 2011. The “Au gré des arts” festival takes place every year and brings the organ to life. If you plan to attend the festival, check the current events calendar in advance.
Two Circular Trails Through Park and Valley
The Parc trail is 4 km long, mostly wooded, and runs along the former seigneurial park. The elevation gain is 50 m. These details give you a practical guide if you want to take the distance and elevation profile into account when planning.
The circular trail through the Bandiat Valley begins on the Parc trail and continues through the valley. Along the way, it crosses the canal and the Bandiat via two footbridges and a Roman ford. The trails offer different highlights: the Parc trail focuses on the distance, elevation gain and wooded route alongside the former park; on the valley trail, the valley and its crossings shape the route.
