Nanteuil-en-Vallée brings several distinct themes together for a stay: protected parts of the Ancienne abbaye, the history of the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, late-medieval half-timbered houses and the Jardins de l’Argentor. When planning your trip, you can focus on architectural history, gardens or both. Nanteuil-en-Vallée also holds the “Petite Cité de Caractère®” label.

Abbey, Church and Half-Timbered Houses

The built and unbuilt parts of the Ancienne abbaye have been fully protected as a Monument historique since 4 April 2017. The listed building Les grands greniers served as the abbey’s guest house. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste also reflects several phases of construction: it was rebuilt in the 13th century and altered in the 15th century, after the Hundred Years’ War. As a parish church, it has been listed as a historic monument since 13 November 1989, with the exception of the sacristy.

The Chapelle du Boisaugeais is also part of the church’s history. It is no longer used for religious purposes and was originally a priory dependent on the Notre-Dame Abbey of Nanteuil-en-Vallée. Late-medieval half-timbered houses line the streets around the church. This means the architectural story extends beyond individual church buildings to include the houses in the streetscape.

Gardens and Waterworks

The Jardins de l’Argentor comprise a historic garden, a former botanical garden, a water garden laid out in the 1990s and an arboretum designed by Eugène Bureau in 1932. The arboretum is home to around 60 tree species, some of which are now protected. Their different origins offer distinct ways to explore the grounds: the water garden dates from the 1990s, while the arboretum’s design dates back to 1932. Admission to the gardens is free all year round. Check local information before your visit.

The Canal des Moines offers a different perspective on the history of the town. It was built in the 12th century to supply water to mills and tanneries. Here, the focus is not on garden design but on a specific historical use of water. The gardens and canal can therefore be considered from two different angles: as a designed landscape and as infrastructure for businesses of the time.

Discover the Architecture

Chez Galland features a medieval passageway, carved lintels and a bread oven. From there, panoramic views stretch across the rooftops of Nanteuil and the steep-sided Argentor Valley. Alongside the individual architectural details, you can also take in the rooftops and landscape.

The Archistoire app offers a free guided tour, open to everyone, of the medieval architecture of Nanteuil-en-Vallée. It is available in the App Store and Play Store. The two perspectives complement each other: Chez Galland highlights specific architectural features and the view, while the app’s tour explores medieval architecture as a theme. Check the app’s availability and access conditions before your trip.
