The Issoire Valley runs through Esse and is protected as a Natura 2000 site. For visitors, the area combines natural surroundings with local traditions and heritage: themed trails explore different topics, alongside a museum and a reconstructed Gallic oppidum.

Walking trails and their themes

The 2.2-kilometre Sentier d’interprétation des Ostensions uses information panels to introduce the local, centuries-old Ostensions tradition. The 2.5-kilometre Tèrra-Aventura trail introduces visitors to the heritage, traditions and legends of Esse. The second trail is 300 metres longer; the themes also differ: the Sentier d’interprétation focuses on the Ostensions, while Tèrra-Aventura explores several facets of the area. Check the latest details about the Tèrra-Aventura trail before setting out.

The Sentier des Gaulois starts at the Village Gaulois and passes farms and old manor houses. It is open year-round and free to access. On the Sentier le Menhir, you can see the last standing menhir in Charente. Check the latest access and route information before setting out on these trails.

The Sentier de la Vallée de l’Issoire lets you discover the area’s history and the rare species found there. Its focus is the area, with its history and wildlife, rather than a single building or tradition.

Heritage and historical insights

The Musée des Ostensions et de la Religion populaire offers a deeper look at local history. Across four rooms, it displays sacred objects, including items related to the celebration of the Ostensions; two rooms host temporary exhibitions closely connected to local history. Visits are possible during the secretariat’s opening hours or by appointment, and admission is free. Check access arrangements before your visit.

The Sentier d’interprétation explains the Ostensions through information panels, while the museum displays related sacred objects. You can choose between an interpretive trail and an exhibition to explore the tradition.

Coriobona is a full-scale reconstruction of a Gallic oppidum overlooking the Issoire Valley. The reconstructed buildings range from an aristocratic house to craft workshops; people of all ages can visit. The range of buildings draws attention to the different aspects of the reconstructed settlement.

A candlestick for the altar in Esse church was made between 1180 and 1185 and is unique in France. Its precise date highlights a different aspect of history from the reconstruction at Coriobona: here, the focus is a dated object; there, a recreated site.

The park and chapel at Château de Villevert can be visited during the European Heritage Days. Check the event dates before making plans, as visits are tied to this event.
