When planning a stay in Villiers-Couture, the cultural heritage around Saint-Hilaire and two routes of different lengths offer useful points of reference. A heritage walk described in 2018 covers 3.8 kilometres; section 7 of the GR36® is about 20 kilometres long. This gives you a choice of different focuses: architectural history or walking distance.

The Church of Saint-Hilaire: Architecture and Details

Saint-Hilaire is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. On the right side of the façade is a Romanesque portal decorated with rosettes and floral motifs. This makes it possible to identify the church not only with its period: the portal’s position and ornamental design are also specific architectural features.

The building and its furnishings have different histories of protection. The church was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in November 1969. Four altar candlesticks from the church are listed as protected historic objects; they were registered on 10 July 1985. The two dates therefore refer to different items: the church and the individual candlesticks.

Other Architectural and Historical Traces

La maison aux décors sculptés was built in 1937. Its notable features include a roof topped with a ridge ornament and a particularly carefully designed gate with pillars. The roofline and entrance offer two different insights into the house’s architectural design.

Local history also spans different periods. The trous-abris were dug by Villiers-Couture residents during the Second World War. The souterrain-refuge probably dates back to the Middle Ages, although it is difficult to establish its exact date. These periods are far apart, and the medieval attribution is explicitly tentative. According to the 2018 heritage booklet, the trous-abris should be found about 50 metres apart along the road from Beauvais-sur-Matha to Chef-Boutonne.

Walking: Heritage Walk and GR36®

The heritage walk described in 2018 starts at the town hall car park. It is 3.8 kilometres long and combines architectural and historical heritage. If you plan to walk it, check before setting out that the route markers and the condition of the trail are suitable for your visit.

Section 7 of the GR36® runs for about 20 kilometres from Villiers-sur-Chizé to Villiers-Couture. This provides a choice of different types of route: a walk starting at the town hall car park and a longer stage with two named endpoints. The details help you assess each route by its length and course.

The Landscape

The area of Villiers-Couture is gently hilly. The Naudin, a tributary of the Aume, flows through the area. These features complement the architectural and local history with details about the landscape and a specific watercourse.
