At Lac du Bois Fleuri, the L’Abbaye de Trizay walking trail begins at a lakeside car park in Trizay. This specific starting point reflects the area’s broader character: the abbey and the ruins of Église Notre-Dame de Monthérault, seasonal gardens, and tours with different route formats. During your stay, you can make culture, a garden visit and a route your own priorities.

Lake and routes in Trizay

The recreational area at Lac du Bois Fleuri has landscaped plantings by the lake and along its shores. The lake was inaugurated in August 1995. There are also different ways to plan a route by the water: the L’Abbaye de Trizay walking trail starts at the lakeside car park, while the Tèrra-Aventura tour comes with its own time and distance requirements.

The Tèrra-Aventura tour «Naufrage au Bois Fleuri» is a two-hour, 3.5-kilometre route by the water. Check the route details before setting out. The Circuit des Abbayes cycling route is 14.8 kilometres long and rated easy. The route passes, among other places, Lac de Trizay and Parc Floral, as well as Abbaye de Trizay. This gives you the choice of a short waterside route with a stated duration and a longer cycling route rated easy—different options for planning your day.

The abbey and church ruins

Trizay Abbey was founded around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries and was under the authority of the prominent La Chaise-Dieu Abbey in the Auvergne. Its surviving apse has an exceptional octagonal floor plan. Several rooms and architectural details in the abbey make a visit memorable beyond the apse.

The chapter house stands out for its multilobed arches and beautiful 13th-century rib vaults. Other rooms open to visitors include the cellar, the large refectory with its wall paintings, and the monks’ dormitories decorated with frescoes. The chapter house, refectory and dormitories each offer their own points of interest, from the shapes of the arches and vaults to the wall paintings and frescoes.

Another part of the area’s architectural history is the ruins of Église Notre-Dame de Monthérault in Trizay. They have been listed as a historic monument since 28 October 1996. The nave may date from the 10th or 11th century; the choir and bell tower were added in the 12th century. The date of the nave therefore remains uncertain, while the later additions can be dated.

Les Jardins de Compostelle

Les Jardins de Compostelle are located above Lac du Bois Fleuri. The two-hectare flower park is inspired by Hispano-Moorish design and features rare flowers, exotic species, local varieties and an olive grove. If you would like to add a botanical focus alongside the historic buildings, this offers a different way to experience Trizay.

The gardens are open to the public seasonally; specific opening dates may vary. Check the dates for your visit if the gardens are to be a fixed part of your travel plans.

Plan your stay and accommodation search

When searching for a hotel in Trizay, your plans for each day are a useful starting point. The abbey and church ruins are the main historic attractions; access to the gardens is seasonal, while the routes offer different formats and details to help with planning. This lets you decide whether culture, gardens or a particular tour will be the focus of your stay, without treating every attraction as a single must-do itinerary.
