The restored Moulin de la Montagne was built in 1795; the church of Saint-Étienne’s present-day bell tower porch dates from the 19th century. Another highlight is mountain bike trail No. 10: it is 31.0 km long and passes through the Saintonge countryside. When planning your visit, you can choose between historic sights and a sporting route. You can focus on buildings and local history, or make the cycling route the centrepiece of your visit.
Mill, church and town hall garden
The Moulin de la Montagne is the last of two mills on the Montagne, the hill on which Semussac is situated. It has been restored and was built in 1795. The church of Saint-Étienne’s present-day bell tower porch dates from a later period: it was built in the 19th century. The mill and porch thus represent two different periods of construction, providing clearly distinct architectural points of reference in the history of the town.
At the foot of the bell tower porch is the town hall garden, on the site of a former priory. The garden has a shaded bench near a fountain, inviting you to take a quiet rest. Here, a historic connection to the site and a place to take a break come together. The bench offers a quieter focus than exploring the buildings.
Early traces and Protestant history
Archaeological finds such as tools and tumuli point to prehistoric settlement at the site of Semussac. Gallo-Roman remains suggest that a Roman road once ran through the commune. The two clues differ both in date and in what they indicate: the finds point to early settlement, while the road’s route remains a supposition. Together with the mill, built in 1795, and the church porch, dating from the 19th century, they form a timeline from early traces to later buildings.
A biographical perspective complements these archaeological and architectural themes. Jean Jarousseau is considered a leading figure in Protestantism in the Saintonge. He died in 1819 at the age of 90 in Chenaumoine; his grave is in the hamlet of Chenaumoine. In keeping with Reformed custom, Jarousseau was buried near his home. His final years, grave and religious custom link his story to the place and broaden the picture of Semussac through the life of a particular person.
Mountain biking through the Saintonge countryside
Moderate mountain bike trail No. 10 starts at the Espace loisirs in Semussac and is 31.0 km long. It follows unpaved paths through the Saintonge countryside and offers views of the Gironde estuary and the freshwater marshes of Talmont-sur-Gironde. The trail can be used in spring, summer, autumn and winter. Its distance and difficulty rating give you a concrete basis for planning; the trail surface and viewpoints define the route’s landscape. This makes it easy to assess the route in terms of its length, moderate difficulty and views.
