Saint-Georges-D'oléron combines local history with opportunities to explore forest trails and enjoy water sports. When planning your trip, it is worth taking both your interests and timing into account: the heritage trail takes about two hours, the navigation zone at Le Douhet is marked during the summer season, and distillery visits follow seasonal schedules. These differences can help you plan a stay focused on culture, outdoor activities or water sports.

Forest landscapes and trails

The Forêt des Saumonards covers a dune and woodland landscape of just under 700 hectares. Numerous marked trails can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Chemin d'Oléron runs through this forest between Boyardville and Saint-Denis-d'Oléron. The marked trails accommodate different types of use, while the route and endpoints of the Chemin d'Oléron are specified. Several hectares, including the Marais du Douhet, were acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral to preserve them and provide public access. Thus, the landscape theme encompasses not only trails but also the explicitly stated aim of preserving these areas and making them accessible to the public.

Church, market halls and heritage trail

The Église Saint-Georges dates from the 11th century and is one of the oldest buildings on the Île d'Oléron. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 1931. Since 2019, it has housed the tomb of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Duchess of Aquitaine and Queen of France and England. Opposite the church, the wooden market halls were built in 1864 on the site of the former cemetery. Together, the church and halls showcase distinct periods of construction: a medieval place of worship and a 19th-century market hall structure. For a stroll, the Saint-Georges heritage trail offers a clear timeframe: it is 4 kilometres long, takes about two hours and starts at the tourist office car park.

Park and fishing

The Parc des Prés Valet is a 14-hectare leisure park. Footpaths connect its different areas, and it also has a fitness trail with 11 wooden stations. You can therefore choose between a walk through the park and a circuit on the fitness trail. Fishing at the Étang des Prés Valet requires a fishing permit from the Amicale des pêcheurs des Prés Valet. Fishing is also subject to the applicable opening dates. If you plan to fish here, be sure to take both the permit and the dates into account.

Water sports at Le Douhet and Chaucre

The Le Douhet kitesurfing zone is suitable for all experience levels. During the summer season, it has a marked navigation zone. At Plage de Chaucre, Enjoy école de Surf offers lessons from beginner to advanced level. This gives you a choice between a kitesurfing zone with a seasonally marked navigation area and surf lessons at a named beach. The Port du Douhet in the Anse de la Malconche can accommodate nearly 400 boats.

Distillery and tasting

The Les Vignerons d'Oléron distillery is dedicated to distillation and the production of Cognac and Pineau. A tasting follows the visit. Visiting hours vary by season, so check the seasonal schedule in advance if you plan a visit. This makes the distillery visit a distinct culinary highlight alongside heritage, landscapes and water sports.
