Périgny can be explored through three themes: architectural history, green spaces and the Canal Marans–La Rochelle with its named cycle route. This lets you plan your stay around whichever focus appeals to you most—historical details, outdoor activities, or cultural and educational experiences.

Church architecture and the history of Coureilles

The Église Saint-Cybard was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 27 February 1925. Its architecture includes three naves and two Gothic portals; the left portal is in the Flamboyant style. Its protected status and architectural features give the church two specific points of historical interest.

Another period in history is reflected at the Coureilles site: two towers stand at the entrance to the present-day Foyer rural. They are the only surviving remains of the medieval castle, which has since disappeared. The site’s origins date back at least to the 15th century. Together with the church, the towers thus offer another way to explore the area’s history—through surviving structures rather than a heritage designation.

Canal de Rompsay and cycle route

The 24-kilometre Canal Marans–La Rochelle runs through Périgny. In Périgny and La Rochelle, it is locally known as the Canal de Rompsay. The Vélodyssée, also known as the Véloroute Atlantique, follows the canal along a secure, signposted route designated as a Voie Verte. The canal and route are therefore connected but have different names: Canal de Rompsay is the local name for the waterway; Vélodyssée and Véloroute Atlantique refer to the route. Check for current diversions when planning a specific route.

Green spaces and outdoor activities

Parc de Coureilles is a natural green space in the heart of Périgny, with diverse flora and mature trees. Facilities include boules courts, basketball and handball courts, a skatepark, a children’s playground and walking paths. There are different ways to spend time in the park, from walking along the paths to enjoying the play and sports facilities.

Opened in 2023, the Rucher-dôme adds an immersive, sensory and educational experience to the range of activities. Visitors can spend time inside, experience the hum and activity of a beehive, and approach and observe the bees freely, without a guide or protective clothing. The visit focuses on experiencing a beehive; the other park facilities offer opportunities for exercise and spending time outdoors.

P’Arc en Ciel opened to the public on 1 July 2023; picnicking is permitted there. Check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.

Culture and learning

The Médiathèque de Périgny offers free use of its collections on site and has a dedicated exhibition area. Registration is required to borrow documents. If you want to plan your visit around the opening hours or a particular event, check the current programme and opening hours.

The Refuges LPO de Périgny programme organises workshops on building nesting boxes and creating biodiversity areas in your own garden. The topics combine practical work with observing nature. If you want to include one of these workshops in your stay, check the current programme.
