For planning a trip to La Vergne, three different points of interest are worth considering: the Église Saint-Martin, the River Boutonne and its connection with canoeing and kayaking, and the walks organised by the Randonneurs Vals de Saintonge. This brings local history and outdoor activities together. You can decide which will shape your stay based on your interests and the specific dates of the walks.

The Boutonne, canoeing and walks

La Vergne lies on the banks of the Boutonne. A decision by the community of municipalities dated 25 June 2025 identifies the river and its banks in La Vergne as facilities of community interest intended for canoeing and kayaking. This makes the connection with the water concrete not only as a landscape feature but also as a sporting activity. If you plan to go canoeing or kayaking, check the arrangements for your dates in advance.

Another outdoor activity is walking with the Randonneurs Vals de Saintonge, whose walks are open to the public. Dates for individual outings may vary, so plan a walking day around the dates actually being offered. Paddlesports and organised walks offer different ways to spend time in La Vergne: one on the Boutonne and its banks, the other on a walk at a suitable time.

Église Saint-Martin and local history

The Église Saint-Martin de La Vergne was built around the 12th century and is the oldest building in the municipality. Together with the adjoining presbytery, it formed the Priory of Saint-Martin de Miossay. The church is therefore also defined by its historical connection with the presbytery. Inside, you can see four figurative stained-glass windows. The portal is apparently the oldest surviving feature; its archivolt band seems to date from the 12th century. The church has also been restored and is in good condition. If you would like to view the windows or portal up close, check access before your visit.

The Liberty Tree stands in front of the church and was planted on 3 December 1797. Its precise date provides a later historical note alongside the medieval building history of Saint-Martin. In La Touche, the Seigneurie La Touche-Marteau has existed since the 13th century. This adds two further, clearly distinct historical time references to the approximate dating of the church and the tentative dating of the portal band: the tree’s exact planting date and the history of the seigneurie since the 13th century.

Getting here and choosing accommodation

The A10 motorway crosses La Vergne. If you are travelling by car, take its route into account when planning your journey. You can then choose your base according to whether Saint-Martin and the town’s history, a walk on a suitable date, or the connection with the Boutonne is your priority.
