At Arnérault Beach, La Flotte harbor, the northern coast of Île de Ré and the town center are all close together. The area also features historic buildings, a market with distinctive architecture and a museum whose exhibits explore the island’s themes across several levels. You can shape your stay around culture, the coast or market life.

Cultural History in the Museum and Historic Buildings

The permanent exhibition at the Musée du Platin spans four themed levels. On the ground floor, it presents Les Châteliers Abbey and traditional activities on Île de Ré: agriculture, winegrowing, oyster farming and fishing. This offers a broad view of the island’s history, taking in not only its buildings but also the work and livelihoods of its people.

Les Châteliers Abbey was completed by Cistercian monks in 1156 and is classified as a historic monument. It includes the abbey church, galleries, the cloister garden and the former refectory. The abbey is freely accessible and can also be explored on guided tours with the Musée du Platin; access and tour schedules may vary.

Fort La Prée was built in 1625 and is the oldest fort built in Charente-Maritime. It was constructed under Louis XIII and later remodeled by the engineer Vauban. The fort and its outworks are fully classified as a historic monument. This classification was granted by a decree dated May 21, 2008. Depending on the day of the week and opening hours, visitors can explore independently or join a guided tour; visiting options may vary by season.

Market, Harbor and Coastline

La Flotte Market was built in 1804 and is inspired by medieval architecture. Its design includes a paved courtyard and wooden awnings above the stalls. The selection includes local product categories such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, seafood, cheese and regional produce. Individual vendors and products may vary.

A guided tour of the harbor covers its history from the 17th century to the present day. Tour availability may vary, so check if you plan to make the harbor visit a fixed part of your stay. La Flotte’s coastal promenade runs parallel to Cours Félix Faure or toward Arnérault Beach, providing a route along this stretch of coast.

Beaches and Activities

Arnérault Beach is a town beach in the center, right next to the harbor. In July and August, three lifeguards from SDIS 17 supervise it from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are restrooms, a shower and a first-aid station. A ramp provides access to the water. Amphibious beach wheelchairs of the Hippocampe or Tiralo types can be made available to people with disabilities; outside the peak season, they can be requested from the town hall.

La Clavette Beach lies west of the harbor and is designated as unsupervised. The two beaches therefore differ in their explicitly stated supervision status: Arnérault is supervised seasonally, while La Clavette is unsupervised. Cycling tours are also among the activities mentioned in La Flotte. They provide another way to shape your stay, complementing its cultural and coastal attractions.
