Freshly pressed apple juice at the autumn festival, an ex-voto ship in the church and the Vélodyssée along the shipping canal give Dompierre-Sur-Mer a variety of travel highlights. You can plan your stay around a festival date, historical themes or outdoor activities. It is worth distinguishing between recurring events, cultural heritage and activities whose programmes may change.

Apple Festival and Food and Drink Experiences

La FĂŞte de la Pomme takes place every year on the second weekend of October. The programme includes apple fritters prepared in front of visitors, as well as fresh apple juice pressed on site. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme details for that year's event in advance; the programme may change.

Cognac Normandin-Mercier offers tours of the former distillery and ageing cellars. These are complemented by tastings of two cognacs and two Pineau des Charentes, as well as a workshop covering everything from blending to tasting. Reservations and visitor arrangements may change; check them in advance if you plan to take part.

Church and Historical Heritage

The Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens dates back to the 11th century and was dependent on Maillezais Abbey in the Vendée. Inside the church is the 18th-century ex-voto ship “L’Ange Gardien”, which is classified as a Monument historique. Also on display there is Dubuisson's 1725 painting “La Présentation au Temple”, which is likewise classified as a Monument historique.

The dates provide different historical reference points: the church's origins go back to the 11th century, the ship dates from the 18th century and the painting is dated 1725. This makes it possible to distinguish the building's history from the two works of art chronologically.

Cycling Route, Canal and Discovery Trail

The Vélodyssée is the French section of EuroVelo 1. This route connects Roscoff with Hendaye and passes through ten départements, including Charente-Maritime. In Dompierre-Sur-Mer, the Vélodyssée runs alongside the shipping canal. The canal is therefore a specific local feature of the cycling route, while Roscoff and Hendaye mark its wider regional scope.

The canal is also used by anglers and picnickers. A group of features along the canal has been listed in the register of protected sites since 14 May 1970. The discovery trail in Dompierre-Sur-Mer is marked by eleven information points. Check the latest information about the trail before visiting, as its interpretive facilities may change.

Horse Riding and Animal Encounters

La Maison du Poney in Dompierre-Sur-Mer offers horse-riding activities ranging from recreational riding to competition, as well as holiday courses for different ability levels. This combines a leisure activity with courses for riders at various levels. Programmes and participation conditions may change; check the current offer if you want to plan your trip around it.

Asinerie des Varennes offers encounters with donkeys in the pastures, including brushing and petting them. This is followed by a live milking demonstration and a tasting of fresh donkey's milk. Booking and access conditions may change; check them in advance if you plan to visit.

When choosing between the two activities, the main consideration is the type of experience: La Maison du Poney focuses on horse riding and holiday courses, while the Asinerie offers direct contact with donkeys, a demonstration and a tasting. You can choose the focus of your stay according to which of these experiences interests you.
