At Châtelaillon-Plage’s three-kilometre-long sandy beach, the tide determines when swimming is possible. Villa architecture, a monumental church fresco and the racecourse offer further ways to explore the town. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between beach activities that depend on the tides and season, and cultural attractions. This lets you treat the tides as a fixed factor in your beach plans and tailor the rest of your stay to your interests.

Beach and tides

Châtelaillon beach is sandy and three kilometres long. Because of the muddy tidal flats, swimming is only possible from two hours before to two hours after high tide. Plan your beach day around high tide and check the tide times for your chosen date. Plage du Casino also carries the Handiplage Level 2 label. The associated accessibility services may be subject to seasonal arrangements. If these are important to your plans, check the details before your visit.

Water sports and cycling route

In summer, the FFVoile Point Plage at the Club Nautique rents catamarans, windsurfing boards, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks on the southern beach of Châtelaillon-Plage. Availability depends on the tides. Check the conditions for your planned date before making a rental a firm part of your itinerary. Season and tide both play a role here: the service is available in summer, and its availability also depends on the tides.

Châtelaillon-Plage is also a point of interest for cycling travellers: the town lies on the Vélodyssée, a long-distance cycling route along the Atlantic coast. This cycling connection adds another perspective on the destination to beach-focused planning.

Villa architecture and church art

The “Balade des villas balnéaires” is a route for independently exploring the history and architecture of notable villas. It offers architecture enthusiasts a clear focus on the town’s villas. Another building combines history with a large-scale work of art: the 19th-century Sainte-Madeleine church houses a monumental 600 m² fresco by artist Amaury Dubois. The villa trail and the church reveal different aspects of the cultural offering—here, the history and architecture of notable villas; there, a fresco in a 19th-century church.

Racecourse and marshland

The history of the Châtelaillon-Plage racecourse began in 1928. Major race days take place every year on the third Sunday in May and on 14 July; check the dates before visiting. The May date depends on the day of the week, while the other is a fixed date. If you want to plan your stay around a race day, check the dates in advance. The racecourse is bordered by 30 hectares of marshland classified as a Natura 2000 site. The history of horse racing and a protected landscape are thus located right next to each other.

More ways to explore

The Terra Aventura route “Centre-ville de Châtelaillon: une aventure 100% architecture” is accessible with a pushchair. A differently themed treasure hunt, “Terra Aventura – à la cache aux moules”, explores the secrets of the Boucholeurs district. The distinction is in the theme: an architecture trail in the town centre or an exploration connected with Boucholeurs.
