Annepont brings together a Romanesque church, an estate preserved as a ruin and archaeological traces from widely separated periods. It also has a protected natural area and historical landscape features. This gives you several starting points for planning your trip: architectural history, early settlement, or nature and hiking. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide what you want your stay to focus on; the history of the village and its landscape offers specific points of interest to help you choose.

Saint-André Church and Logis de Maine-Moreau

The Église Saint-André is a Romanesque church dating from the late 12th century. It has preserved most of its original Romanesque walls; Corinthian capitals frame its portal. The church is believed to have originated in the context of the Way of St James. It was classified as a historic monument by decree on January 21, 1907. The surviving structure and the portal’s design give the church distinct architectural features: alongside the Romanesque masonry, the richly sculpted entrance draws the eye.

The Maine-Moreau estate was built in 1660 and is now preserved only as a ruin. Surviving features include a round-arched portal and an octagonal stair tower. The carved, gabled door is a Louis XIII-style door with pilasters and a triangular pediment. The ruins were listed as a historic monument by decree on August 22, 1949. Unlike Saint-André, the focus here is not a largely intact Romanesque structure, but the architecture of an estate whose individual features stand out within the ruins. The Logis lies outside the village center, amid the extensive fields surrounding the village.

Archaeological traces from several periods

The history of the area stretches far back before the construction of the church and the Logis. Annepont and Taillebourg are part of a major settlement area on the right bank of the Charente; settlement there dates from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic. Numerous remains of Neolithic flint-working sites have been preserved in Annepont, including pieces intended for polishing. This gives the prehistoric past a tangible connection to local flint working. Roman coins, found near La Forêt on the ancient road from Saintes to Saint-Jean d’Angély, date from a much later period. The finds thus represent distinct historical layers: Neolithic flint working and coins from Roman times.

Landscape and hiking

The landscape can also be viewed from different perspectives. Les côteaux de Annepont et Château-Gaillard is one of the eight active protected natural areas in Vals de Saintonge. For the stretch of the Rutelière in Annepont, a landscape description in a 2018 planning report highlights the lush poplar vegetation. Another historical perspective is offered by Annepont’s medieval high forests, known as the « forêt d’Annepont ». The historical forest name and the natural area’s current status refer to different aspects of the landscape.

A 2018 planning report also describes a hiking loop that passes through Annepont and Taillebourg. This offers a different focus for your plans than the historic buildings: the loop description covers both municipalities, while the church, Logis and archaeological traces highlight individual aspects of history. Since the route description dates from 2018, check the latest route information before setting out.
