Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme combines a medieval townscape with cultural attractions, gardens and a centrally located harbour. The fortifications and old houses of the Cité Médiévale are a key part of its heritage. Other highlights include L'Entrepôt des Sels, a cultural and dining venue, and various outdoor spaces such as the Herbarium des Remparts and the Fruticetum.

Medieval heritage: walls, houses and towers

The Cité Médiévale includes defensive walls, towers, fortified gates and a castle. Its built heritage also includes a two-nave church and checkerboard-pattern walls made of dressed flint, sandstone or limestone. Narrow cobbled streets and flower-filled lanes shape the townscape. Among the half-timbered houses are also overhanging houses; the oldest date from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Another historic landmark is the Tours Guillaume: their remains date from the 11th century and are among the oldest surviving traces of Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme. The town thus brings together buildings and remains from centuries far apart. The Chapelle de Saint-Valery dite des marins also makes its own architectural statement. This Neo-Gothic chapel has checkerboard-pattern walls of white stone and flint, and a bell tower topped by a seagull. It is located at one of the Baie de Somme’s viewpoints; the Tours Guillaume offer panoramic views across the bay.

Culture and guided tours

In the heart of Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme is L'EntrepĂ´t des Sels, a building classified as a Monument historique. It brings together heritage, culture and dining. Its auditorium seats 310 for live performances, and film screenings are held throughout the year. The building adds a cultural venue to the historic architecture, with a film programme that is not limited to the summer months.

The Église Saint-Martin can be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours last one hour and are open to all visitor groups. Check the current tour schedule before your trip.

Summer market and regional produce

The Marché du Quai is a seasonal counterpart to the year-round film screenings: from June to early September, the market takes place on Fridays from 3 pm to 8 pm. At the quays, you can discover the region’s local produce. Selected local producers and artisans offer food, handmade goods and everyday essentials; the categories may vary from one market to the next. If the market is an important part of your plans, check the exact dates before travelling.

Gardens above the fortifications

The Herbarium des Remparts is located above the medieval ramparts. It is surrounded by walls of flint and pebbles; rare and heirloom vegetables grow among aromatic and medicinal plants within these stone enclosures. The Fruticetum offers a different perspective, interpreting medieval gardens in a contemporary way. A botanical collection and a modern interpretation of a historic garden style thus offer distinct garden themes.

Harbour and cycling routes

The Port de plaisance has 250 berths, is centrally located in the town and is close to shops, restaurants and attractions. It welcomes visiting boats all year round. Two route connections are useful for cyclists: the Véloroute Vallée de Somme reaches the medieval town via the Port de plaisance. Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme also has a direct connection between the Véloroute and EuroVelo 4, also known as La Vélomaritime.
