Pendé in the Baie de Somme landscape
Pendé is part of the Grand Site de France Baie de Somme area. The decision of 1 April 2025 awards it the label for eight years. The classified landscape area also includes Cap Hornu, Pointe du Hourdel and the adjoining foreshore; Pendé is included in it as well. This classification dates back to the decree of 24 July 2006. The two designations offer different perspectives on the place: one describes Pendé’s membership of the Grand Site area, while the other reflects its inclusion in a specific landscape area.
Camping municipal Le Marais offers a tangible connection to the landscape. It is set in the leafy Vallée de l’Amboise; the marshes and Bois du Petit Pendé extend beyond the camping area. The Bois is part of the campsite’s natural surroundings. The coast, Bas-Champs, marshes and woodland are also nearby. The Côte Picarde (Baie de Somme, Bas-Champs) is less than three kilometres from this campsite. Walking trails and a cycle path are also nearby.
Cycling between the coast and Bas-Champs
The Circuit du Gravelot is a 37-kilometre cycling route with an average riding time of four hours. The route passes between the sea, dunes, pebbles and Bas-Champs. Small signs depicting a gravelot mark the route. If you are planning a cycle ride with a set distance and average duration, you can factor these details into your day’s plans. Check the route conditions before setting off.
The trails near Camping municipal Le Marais and the Circuit du Gravelot are different reference points for outdoor activities: the route has a stated distance and average riding time, while the trails near the campsite are described here in terms of their proximity and type. When planning, this helps you decide whether a cycling tour with a specified distance or the local surroundings, with walking trails and a cycle path, is the deciding factor, without combining them into a single route.
Église Saint-Martin and its historic details
The Église Saint-Martin de Pendé brings together several architectural features dating from the early 16th century: the nave, side aisle and choir are all from this period. The building is partially protected as a Monument historique, with the protection specifically dated 15 June 1926 and covering the roof timbers and the vault ribs of the side aisle. The protection therefore explicitly concerns parts of the building’s structure, not every element of the church as a whole.
The stone baptismal fonts also have their own provenance and date. They come from Saint-Valery Abbey and are dated to the 16th century, around 1540. Culture enthusiasts may wish to distinguish these furnishings from the building’s later protection history: the baptismal fonts point to an earlier period, whereas the protection record concerns the listing of specific architectural features in 1926.
The local heritage also includes the calvary cross on Place de l’Église, which still has its Croisettes. A calvary cross with an iron cross near the church has been restored. Together with the church and its specified architectural features, these crosses add to the historic details that set Pendé apart alongside its landscape designation.
