The Musée Somme 1916 is located ten metres underground in an air-raid shelter from the Second World War. Right next door stands the Neo-Byzantine Basilique Notre-Dame de Brebières. These two sites reveal two different historical sides of Albert: its Marian pilgrimage tradition and its commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. The town also offers opportunities for walks and other cultural events.

Pilgrimage Tradition and Local History

The basilica is a landmark in the town centre and is protected as a historic monument. Since the 11th or 12th century, it has been an important Marian pilgrimage site in Picardy. Every September, around 8 September, a novena is held there, attracting worshippers from all over the world. If you would like to experience this event, check the dates for the year you plan to travel.

Museums Offering Different Perspectives

At the Musée Somme 1916, a 250-metre-long underground passage tells the story of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Realistic scenes depict the daily lives of soldiers of various nationalities who fought in the area. The Musée de l’Épopée de l’Industrie et de l’Aéronautique offers an interactive visit with 12 QR codes and narrated explanations of its most important exhibits. Digital features may be updated; check which digital content is currently available before your visit.

Walks and Nature in Albert

The Jardin public has a classified arboretum, a bandstand, a waterfall, a children’s play area, and a small animal park. The public garden is also a pleasant place for a walk or to relax. The Vélodrome is a 24-hectare natural area within the town, crossed by the Ancre and offering opportunities for walks. Visitors can spot mallards, moorhens, swans, geese, and grey herons there; sightings are not guaranteed. Maintenance and local conditions may change, so it is worth checking the situation on site before setting out for a walk.

The “Albert, histoire et nature” trail is a 6.5-kilometre urban loop that combines nature, history, and architecture and partly follows the Ancre. It passes behind the Basilique Notre-Dame de Brebières and in front of the Musée Somme 1916. The route is rated easy. However, check the condition of the path and the route on site, as the rating may not reflect temporary conditions.

Remembrance and a Regional Speciality

The “Témoins du Passé” statue trail features several 1.80-metre-high resin statues. They represent the different nationalities who fought during the Battles of the Somme. Together with the scenes at the Musée Somme 1916, they offer another perspective on the people and the history of the conflict.

Gâteau battu is also part of the regional cuisine: this speciality is associated with Maison Désert and Watteau in Albert. If you are specifically looking for it, check in advance whether the cake is currently available there.
