Ressons-sur-Matz combines a landscape shaped by its river and wetlands with a rich local history. The town’s historic walking tour invites visitors to discover the history of its buildings and streets. The Mont Bellot loop also passes through the town and is designated as a hiking or mountain biking route. This offers two distinct ways to plan a stay: a thematic introduction to local history and a specific circular route.

Landscape and Trails

The Matz runs through the municipality, creating conditions that favour marshes and peat bogs. The river and wetlands form a distinct aspect of the landscape alongside the town’s historic buildings and structures.

The Mont Bellot loop passes through Ressons-sur-Matz and is approximately 4 km long. Two route formats are listed: a 1-hour-30-minute hiking route and a 30-minute mountain biking route. The distance and times can be considered together; the stated duration varies according to the mode of travel. This lets you fit the time estimate into your daily plans according to your preferred format.

Architectural History Across the Centuries

The Ferme de Bayencourt dates from the 16th century and has retained its original character. It is built of dressed stone and brick, and its foundations date back to the time of the Knights Templar. Its preserved appearance and named building materials make the farm a concrete example of local architectural history. The building and its foundations also point to different historical periods.

Around 1430, the fortifications of Ressons-sur-Matz had four gates: the Porte de Montdidier, the Porte de Compiègne, the Porte de Bayencourt and the Porte de Roye. The fortification complex also included a keep. Together with the Ferme de Bayencourt, these details offer two different perspectives on the past: fortifications dating to around 1430 and a farm from the 16th century.

The Église Saint-Nicolas et Saint-Louis was built within the fortifications in the 12th century. It was remodelled in 1554, giving it its present appearance. Its features include Art Deco stained-glass windows by Paul Louzier, dating from 1924. They depict Joan of Arc fighting alongside the Poilus. The church thus reflects medieval architectural history, remodelling in the 16th century and a later 20th-century decorative feature.

The Chapelle de l’Épine is dedicated to Notre-Dame and was consecrated in 1834, replacing two earlier structures. The site’s history goes back further: according to local historical accounts, the first chapel was built there in the 17th century in fulfilment of a soldier’s vow. During the wars, he prayed that a chapel would be built if he survived. The consecration year and the story of the vow provide two distinct points of reference for the chapel’s history.

The First World War adds another historical layer. From 1916, Ressons-sur-Matz housed the Hôpital d’Evacuation 36/2 in the area around the railway station. This aspect of the town’s history adds a specific wartime connection to its architectural history.
