The Château de Montherlant probably stands on the foundations of an older castle, and the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was originally built within its grounds. This historical connection offers two different perspectives on Montherlant: the château grounds and the architectural history of the parish church. A circular trail adds a route through fields and a wooded section to the architectural details.

Château Grounds and Historical Heritage

The Château de Montherlant dates from the early 18th century and is built of brick and stone. It consists of a main residential block, two side wings, and two additional wings that project at right angles. The main residential block has two side wings and two wings that project at right angles. Inside, 18th-century wood panelling has been preserved; the historic fabric therefore ranges from the building’s form to its furnishings. The estate also includes a park, a garden, and a kitchen garden.

The château is privately owned. Do not plan a visit without first checking access arrangements. By decree of 17 March 2003, the château, including its park and garden, was added to the supplementary list of protected historic monuments. The château is also a place of remembrance associated with a writer.

The Parish Church’s Building Phases

The oldest part of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption dates from the Romanesque period. The rectangular church measures 21 × 6 metres and comprises a single nave, a porch, and a two-bay choir with rib vaulting. The chamfered portal, known as the “Porte des morts” (“Door of the Dead”), is typical of the 12th century. These features give a concrete impression of the layout and older parts of the building.

In the 14th century, the church had a choir and a bell tower. The nave entrance dates from 1787, and the porch was built in 1836. Its pillars are said to come from a Gallo-Roman temple. The different dates make it possible to trace several building phases rather than reducing the church to a single period of construction. Since 1970, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption has been listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments of France.

Visits can be arranged by contacting the mairie of Saint-Crépin-Ibouvillers in advance. Confirm the arrangements before your trip. The church is considered easily accessible for people with reduced mobility; check the specific conditions on site.

A Circular Trail Through Fields and Woodland

The “Trois villages au cœur des Sablons” circular trail begins on Rue de l’Église in Montherlant and passes the Château shortly after the start. It then follows a farm track through fields. Next, it goes through a wooded section and descends towards Valdampierre. The loop therefore offers a different focus from the architectural history: its route leads from open farmland to a wooded section, followed by a descent. If you plan to follow the trail, check the current route and conditions before setting out; route details may change.
