Béthisy-Saint-Martin offers several ways to explore nature and local history: La Sablonnière is a municipal limestone grassland site, the Church of Saint-Martin dates back to around 1140, and Château de la Mothe features building phases from several centuries. Also worth noting are the ancient Chaussée Brunehaut, now a cycle path, and the River Automne. When planning, it helps to choose your main focus first: would you like a hike to shape your stay, are you interested in cycling and fishing, or would you like to discover architectural history? You can also choose a hotel to suit these plans.

La Sablonnière: Limestone Grassland and Biodiversity

La Sablonnière, also known as L’Ourlet de Béthisy-Saint-Martin, covers 0.41 hectares. This municipal site is a limestone grassland with a remarkable natural heritage. It was once a sports ground; the site has since been returned to nature. Today, it is rich in fauna and flora. Lutetian limestone and the associated sands form a challenging habitat for plants. Heat-loving plants found here include yellow bartsia, meadow saxifrage and monkey orchid. The western green lizard is also regularly spotted. Visitors interested in heat-loving plants will find several species specifically named here; the green lizard adds to the picture of the local fauna.

Access is via Rue Saint-Lazare and the path at house number 325. A 3 km hike is indicated for the visit. Take this route information into account when planning, and check local conditions before setting out.

Church and Château de la Mothe

The Church of Saint-Martin was built around 1140 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1931. Its façade features a portal dating from the early 13th century, with slender columns and mouldings. A porch, supported by two massive columns, stands in front of the portal. These details give the building a distinctive architectural profile: the entrance is shaped by both the portal’s finer forms and the porch’s sturdy supports.

Château de la Mothe features major building phases from the 17th and 19th centuries. Its façades and roofs have been partially protected as a historic monument since 16 December 1986. The château is privately owned, so its history can be explored without assuming that the interior is open to visitors. Together with the church, it offers another perspective on the local cultural heritage, this time through building phases from considerably later centuries.

Cycle Path, River and Field Archery

The Chaussée Brunehaut is an ancient Roman road that connected Senlis and Soissons and passes through Béthisy-Saint-Martin. Today, it has been converted into a cycle path. This route brings together a historic connection and its present-day use for cycling—another option alongside the natural experience of La Sablonnière.

The River Automne runs through the commune, where first-category fishing is possible. For your specific fishing day, check the applicable rules separately. Jeu d’arc is also part of the area’s history: it dates back to 1863. The annual field archery event at the Jeu d’arc draws many archers to Béthisy-Saint-Martin. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates before you travel. Hiking, cycling, fishing and architectural history thus offer different ways to shape your stay.
