A distinctive introduction to Auneuil is its ceramic history: the former Boulenger or SAPCA factory site is now home to the Musée de la céramique architecturale. The same site also includes a pottery workshop and a shop. The combination of former industry and present-day uses makes ceramics a common thread in the town’s history, alongside the distinct chapters of its church architecture and the routes around Auneuil.

Ceramics and Local History

The story goes back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. First brickworks, then the production of roof tiles and ceramics, fundamentally changed the character of Auneuil. The Boulenger brothers’ manufactory is considered the first manufactory of inlaid tiles on the continent. Ceramics in Auneuil therefore represent not only a single former business, but also a longer development from brickmaking to a specialized manufactory.

The history of the factory site is marked by two separate dates: the site of the Boulenger factory was classified as a Monument historique in 1991; the Musée de la céramique architecturale was established there in 1994. The Maison Boulenger is a separate site. A Boulenger ceramic plaque was used again on its façade, and the building was classified as a Monument historique in 1992. The dates therefore refer to two different places and events.

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Church

The church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption opens another chapter in the town’s history. It dates back to the founding of the priory of Auneuil in the 11th century and was extended in the 16th century. The tower and portal also have their own dates: the bell tower dates from 1746 and the portal from 1782. Together, these details show different phases in the building’s history rather than reducing the church to a single date of origin.

A walking procession runs from the church in Le Vauroux to Auneuil via the Chapelle de la Piété and includes a Mass. Check the annual programme before planning your trip around this procession. It is a possible addition for visitors whose stay coincides with the programme, rather than an offering that can be assumed to take place on a set schedule.

Trans’Oise and the Sunday Market

The Trans’Oise also offers a concrete point of reference when choosing activities. The 6.5 km Rainvillers–Auneuil section connects Auneuil, the Zone d’Activités de Sinancourt, the parc animalier Saint-Léger and Rainvillers with Beauvais, and links up with the Avenue verte Paris–Londres. The Trans’Oise is a designated, secure route for cyclists, walkers, roller skaters and people with reduced mobility. Details about the section and its users help visitors consider a route-based stay as an option in its own right, alongside the themes of ceramics and architectural history.

The market is also worth considering if you are visiting on a Sunday: it takes place in the morning, from 08:30 to 12:30. Check for local exceptions on public holidays. This set time window can be factored into your daily plans without treating the market as the same kind of visit as a museum or a route.

Auneuil also became a travel destination from 1936 onwards. At that time, the train provided access to the heights of Auneuil and the viewpoints overlooking the Avelon valley. This historical development adds an earlier travel story to the town’s present-day themes: ceramic production, church construction and the landscape each took on significance in different ways at different times.

When planning a stay in Auneuil, you can choose your focus: the history of the Boulenger manufactory and its ceramics, the building phases of the church or the Trans’Oise section. The Sunday market offers an additional destination with clearly defined hours. The procession, by contrast, depends on the annual programme; the historical train connection is part of the town’s history.
