In Sinceny, early local history, faience art, and a landscape shaped by river and forest come together. Among the oldest remains are the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa at the edge of the forest, dating from the second half of the first century. The Roman road Brunehaut is also part of the town’s history; it dates from the beginning of the first century.

Between the Oise, a hilltop, and the forest

The Oise forms Sinceny’s northern boundary, while the Coucy Low Forest lies to the south. The town sits on a hill 102 metres high, near the western edge of this forest. The river, elevated position, and forest boundary give the landscape a clear sense of orientation. Sinceny is also part of the Natura 2000 bird protection area “Forêts picardes: massif de Saint-Gobain”.

The Saint-Gobain and Coucy-Basse forest massif forms a remarkable ecological complex and is home to a diverse breeding bird population. Just over half of the massif consists of beech forest, crossed by narrow, winding valleys. The Saint-Gobain and Coucy-Basse forest massif shapes the wider natural area; the Oise and the Low Forest frame Sinceny locally.

Faience and early local history

The dates of the Roman remains differ considerably: the Brunehaut road dates from the beginning of the first century, while the villa remains are from its second half. Later, faience became a defining part of the town’s history. In 1737, Jean-Baptiste Fayard established a faience manufactory in former buildings; the town hall is now housed in these buildings.

The decoration of early Sinceny faience can also be traced through specific details. At first, it featured blue cameo decoration. The lambrequin pattern followed soon after: the blue design was usually accentuated with red lines, and occasionally with green or yellow ones. On some pieces, the blue maker’s mark “.S.” appears on the reverse between two dots. Decoration and maker’s mark are two distinct features that help describe the local ceramic tradition.

A faience exhibition can be seen at the town hall during its opening hours; check the current hours before visiting. At the Biennale de la FaĂŻence in October 2024, original Sinceny faience pieces loaned by collectors were exhibited in collaboration with the town hall. This edition is a past event; check separately for future editions.

Parc Saint-Lazare and events throughout the year

Parc Saint-Lazare covers just over 3.5 hectares and is intended as a park accessible to everyone. A municipal description from September 2022 lists a 300 m² boules court and fitness equipment. It also states that paths, sanitary facilities, and one or two pieces of fitness equipment are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Confirm the current conditions and the state of the facilities locally before your visit.

The Marché Artisanal local des Nécreux also offers a specific seasonal point of reference. From March to October, the market is held on the second Sunday of each month. From November to February, the Salle des 15 Setiers is listed as the venue. Check municipal event listings again before travelling so you can plan your visit for the right dates.
