Architecture, gardens and sacred art give Puisieux-Et-Clanlieu a clearly defined cultural focus. Its highlights range from an 18th-century Thiérache manor house and an award-winning garden to two distinct works of art in the parish church of Saint-Martin. The building’s form, the garden’s design and the visual and spatial arts each make their own contribution.

Château Architecture and Heritage Protection

The Château de Puisieux-et-Clanlieu is an 18th-century Thiérache manor house. Brick and slate define the building, while projecting pavilions structure its form. A projecting pavilion extends beyond the façade line, giving the architecture a layered appearance. The building can thus be understood not only in terms of its period: the combination of these materials and the articulation created by the pavilions are also part of its distinctive character.

The scope of heritage protection is precisely defined: the façades and roofs of cadastral parcel C 474 are listed as a historic monument. The listing is based on the decree of 11 July 2008. It applies to these parts of the building, not to the entire estate as a whole. The manor house dates from the 18th century; it was listed in 2008.

Gardens and Old Trees

The Jardins du Château de Puisieux et Clanlieu have been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” distinction. They are set in a romantic park surrounding a château dating from the late 18th century. The distinction applies to the gardens, whereas the château’s heritage protection covers its façades and roofs. The garden and the building are therefore distinct subjects, even though both contribute to the town’s cultural character.

The gardens include a collection of centuries-old trees, among them Atlas cedars, Himalayan cedars and maple trees. The collection includes two types of cedar and maple trees.

Painting and Panelling in Saint-Martin

The painting Christ at the Sea of Tiberias is located in the parish church of Saint-Martin, on the harmonium gallery. The oil painting on canvas has a gilded frame and dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. It depicts Christ walking on the water during a storm, as the boat carrying the Apostles is about to sink. Its subject, medium and date give the work several distinct characteristics: the scene depicted, its execution on canvas and its historical period.

Another artistic feature of the church is a section of a panelling ensemble on the theme of the Annunciation. The ensemble probably came from the Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame de Bohéries, dates to the mid-18th century and displays Rocaille features. Its connection to the abbey remains probable, not certain. The Rocaille features point to a Rococo context, while the Annunciation depicts a different religious subject from the painting of Christ on the water.
