Épieds offers several ways to shape your stay: the architecture of the Église Saint-Médard, the designated woodland area Bois des Usages de Coincy et de la Tournelle, and regularly organised exhibitions. To plan your visit, you could first consider whether architectural history, nature, or a specific exhibition date will be its main focus.

The Église Saint-Médard and its architectural history

The Église Saint-Médard was classified as a historic monument by decree on 5 February 1920. Its nave has two aisles; it also has a transept and a choir. These elements offer a concrete insight into the church’s layout. The choir and transept are in the Early Gothic style and date from the late 12th century. This brings two distinct points in time together: the Early Gothic design of these elements and the later classification as a historic monument in 1920. The nave is the main space running lengthwise; the transept runs across it and extends the floor plan.

The details inside also have their own historical associations. In the chapel in the north arm of the transept is a stone figure of the Virgin Mary dating from the 14th century. At the entrance to the choir is an unfigured tombstone for Anthoine de Berthomeuf, Seigneur de Moucheton, who died in 1722. The figure of the Virgin Mary and the tombstone differ both in subject matter and in date. Together, alongside the church’s architecture, they offer two named artistic and commemorative elements.

Woodland and regional context

Épieds is one of the municipalities included in the continental ZNIEFF Type 1 site “Bois des Usages de Coincy et de la Tournelle.” The woodland of this ZNIEFF consists of the Bois de la Tournelle and the Bois de Coincy. The two hills are separated by the Ordrimouille stream.

In the wider region around Épieds, the area associated with Château-Thierry is promoted for its Champagne vineyards. This connection adds a broader regional perspective to the local themes.

Planning for exhibitions and transport

The “2000 histoires de mon village” association regularly organises exhibitions in Épieds on various themes. If an exhibition is an important reason for your trip, check the dates for your preferred period before planning your stay around it. This lets you combine a cultural focus with your travel plans without assuming that a visit will be available on a particular date.

Épieds is served by the FABLIO on-demand transport network. Reservations can be made online via a dedicated app. Check the current booking arrangements before travelling, as they may change.
