The circular trail “La croix à coquilles” starts at the church square in the centre of Saint-Georges-le-Gaultier and passes over the viaduct. The viaduct was built in 1913 for a railway line. Construction of the line was never completed after being interrupted during the First World War. Bungee jumping is also practised at the viaduct. If you plan to take part in this activity, confirm locally that it is available before your trip.

Chapels, Cross and Washhouse

The Sainte-Anne Chapel dates from the 12th century. It has a rectangular nave that ends in a small structure containing the sanctuary. A lake lies directly beside the chapel. This places a medieval chapel and the water side by side; the architecture and lakeside setting make it a distinct local highlight for travellers interested in culture.

Another chapel is the Chapelle de l’Auberdière: it covers only a few square metres and lies a few hundred metres from Niaufles. While Sainte-Anne is characterised by its age and floor plan, the main feature of de l’Auberdière is its very small size. This makes it possible to distinguish the two local chapels by their different architectural features.

The Croix Ă  coquilles bears five engraved scallop shells. It is thought to have served as a signpost for pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela or Mont-Saint-Michel. The shell motif provides a concrete point of reference for this cautious historical interpretation and adds a possible link to two pilgrimage destinations to the story of the structure.

The washhouse in Saint-Georges-le-Gaultier was also restored in the early 2000s and retains an impressive valve system. This technical detail offers another local point of interest: insight into the history of a washhouse and its mechanisms.

Hiking over the Viaduct

The circular trail is 7 km long, rated as a moderately difficult hiking route, and listed as taking two hours. Its distance and duration provide a practical basis for fitting the hike into your day. The surface types are also described: 60 percent of the route is on unpaved paths, and 40 percent is on a dedicated trail. This information adds practical guidance about the route to the distance alone. Weather and maintenance can affect trail conditions, so check the current situation before setting out.

Fishing at the Pond

The Étang de Saint-Georges-le-Gaultier is a category 2 fishing pond and has a fishing platform adapted for people with reduced mobility. This offers a different focus for outdoor activities alongside the moderately difficult hike. The pond is for fishing, while the circular trail offers a route with a specified distance and duration.

Accommodation and Travel Planning

When looking for a hotel in Saint-Georges-le-Gaultier, you can first decide which theme you want to shape your days around. The hike is clearly defined as seven kilometres and two hours; its moderate difficulty and the surface types add detail for planning your time. The chapels, cross, viaduct and washhouse appeal to different interests in local architectural and technological history, while the Étang offers a focus on fishing.
