La Flèche offers several highlights to explore: wildlife, protected landscapes and historic sites. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the type of visit as well as the subject. The zoo offers narrated feeding sessions, several activities are available at the La Monnerie leisure area, and the cultural sites offer different formats: guided tours, tours available on request or self-guided visits. This lets you weigh up your interests alongside the practical conditions for visiting.

Wildlife and Nature in La Flèche

The Zoo de La Flèche was founded in 1946 by Jacques Bouillault and was the first private zoo in France. The visitor programme includes narrated feeding sessions with California sea lions. Its founding story and this programme feature appeal to different interests: one puts the zoo in its historical context, while the other focuses on a particular animal species.

The Marais de Cré-sur-Loir/La Flèche has been designated a regional nature reserve since March 31, 2008. It is home to 150 bird species, around 15 fish species and numerous insects. Its rich biodiversity thus includes several groups of animals and adds an ecological perspective to its protected status.

The La Monnerie leisure area can be explored year-round on foot, by bicycle, on roller skates or by scooter. Activities available there include swimming, playing together as a family, picnicking, relaxing in the shade of the trees and birdwatching. Access rules are more restrictive at Lac des Oiseaux near La Monnerie: this protected natural area has been open to walkers since 2017 and is accessible only on foot or by bicycle. If you plan to use roller skates or a scooter, bear this difference in mind.

Historic Tours and Visit Formats

Guided tours of the Prytanée National Militaire include the French garden, the zoological collections room, the halls of honour and generals, the historic courtyards, the Church of Saint-Louis and the Pierre Guillaumat area. Schedules may vary by season, so plan according to your preferred travel dates.

Since 1999, the Moulin de la Bruère has been the last mill in France to produce blocks of ice. Individual one-hour guided tours are available on request; arrangements may change. The tour also explains how the mill works: a waterwheel powered by the river drives an ingenious system capable of producing electricity and cooling ice. The visit therefore connects ice production with the question of how river power can be used to make other products.

The Chapelle Notre Dame des Vertus is the oldest sanctuary in La Flèche. Its rich furnishings span the Renaissance to the 19th century. Visits are self-guided and without a tour guide; visiting arrangements may also change. The wide timespan represented by the furnishings brings together several periods in one place.

When planning visits to the cultural sites, the format is a useful point of comparison: the Prytanée offers guided tours and requires seasonal planning, the Moulin offers individual one-hour guided tours on request, and the Chapelle is visited independently without a guide.
