Écommoy offers several distinct ways to explore local history and activities: the protected Église Saint-Martin, the legend of the Pierres Tournantes, a historic avenue, a hiking trail in two lengths, and guided tours at the racecourse that depend on event dates. This selection does not suggest a single fixed itinerary. Instead, it helps you tailor your stay to the theme that interests you most: architecture, storytelling traditions, hiking, or a visit timed to coincide with an event. For travel planning, it is particularly useful that you can compare two trail lengths, while the guided tours are linked to trotting races.

Church and avenue: distinct layers of history

The Église Saint-Martin was built from 1840 onward and is protected in its entirety as a Monument historique. It is considered the first Neo-Gothic church in the department. These details highlight different aspects: the construction date points to the start of the church’s construction, the designation identifies its architectural style, and the protection covers the entire building. Visitors interested in architecture can therefore consider its style and heritage protection as two distinct aspects, rather than treating them as the same thing.

The Allée de Fontenailles offers another layer of history: it was laid out during the reign of Louis XIV by the king’s gardener. This attribution identifies the avenue not only with a particular period but also with the person who designed it. In contrast to the Église Saint-Martin, built from 1840 onward, this detail takes us back to a different historical period. You can thus consider the church’s construction history and the avenue laid out by the royal gardener as distinct cultural and historical themes.

The Pierres Tournantes: legend and site history

The Pierres Tournantes are visible in the Landes du Rhonne. A medieval legend tells how the megaliths, each weighing around 10 to 15 tonnes, rise at night and spin through the air. Their history at the site is a separate matter: during construction of the A28 motorway, they were moved and re-erected at a place designed for tourists and walkers. A medieval tale and a concrete change of location therefore sit side by side. If you are interested in legends, you can distinguish the tale from the actual relocation during motorway construction.

Hiking and a visit that depends on event dates

The circular route “La légende du coq” is marked in yellow as E4 in Écommoy. It is 19.6 km long; a shorter option measures 15.5 km. The difference is 4.1 km. This gives you a concrete comparison of the route lengths: both figures refer to the same circular route, but to different distances. You can therefore begin your planning by deciding how far you would like to walk.

Every year on the eve of trotting races, free guided tours are offered at the Écommoy racecourse. Check the dates before your trip and plan your visit around one of these tours. Unlike the hiking route, which offers two distances to choose from, planning a visit here depends on the event date.
