Saumur can be explored through several distinct themes: the medieval Château, collections of armoured vehicles and engines, the French equestrian tradition, and gardens and water sports on the Loire. This makes the city an appealing choice if you want to combine culture and landscape during your stay. Each of these highlights is quite different, ranging from architectural history and technological development to seasonal activities on the water.
Château de Saumur: princely architecture
The Château de Saumur is one of the last surviving examples of princely architecture from the Middle Ages. Louis II gave it its present-day silhouette in the 15th century. This connects a specific historical change with the building’s architectural significance. The admission price includes a 30-minute historical and architectural guided tour of the exterior. It adds a relevant explanation to your view of the château. Check the visiting conditions before your trip.
Vehicles and engines
The Musée des Blindés has a collection of almost 800 vehicles that is unique in Europe, 250 of which are on public display. The museum presents armoured vehicles alongside frescoes and costumes from past eras. Its exhibits therefore extend beyond the subject of vehicles.
The Musée du Moteur offers a different technical perspective: its collection is devoted to all kinds of internal combustion engines and spans the period from 1818 to the present day. The weights cover a wide range too, from 800 grams to 21 tonnes. Restored pieces offer a historical, technical and educational perspective on the development of mechanical energy. The two museums therefore focus on different themes: armoured vehicles with complementary exhibits on the one hand, and the development of engines over long periods and across a range of weight classes on the other.
Equestrian tradition and gardens
The Cadre Noir is another part of Saumur’s cultural identity. It embodies the excellence of the French equestrian tradition, which is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. This adds another cultural perspective to the themes of architecture and technology.
The Jardin des Plantes is situated on a hillside in the heights of the Nantilly district, in the shadow of the château. It is recognised as an LPO site by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux. This offers a different way to experience the city from its collections, with the focus here on gardens and nature.
Water sports on the Loire
The Millocheau leisure and water sports centre is located on the ĂŽle de Saumur, on the banks of the Loire opposite the city. Activities include sailing and stand-up paddleboarding with the PĂ´le nautique de Saumur, as well as canoe and kayak hire on the Loire. These water activities are seasonal and depend on operating conditions. Plan accordingly and check operating conditions in advance.
