Mûrs-Erigné offers several clearly distinct hiking options: two circular walks with specific distances and walking times, as well as a digital discovery trail and two long-distance hiking stages with named destinations. You can therefore start by choosing according to the time you have and the type of route. A shorter loop, a trail through vineyards and woodland, or a longer stage each suit different planning needs. The landscape and local history also give your choice a thematic dimension—from the Loire landscape and vineyards to the river’s former uses.

Compare circular walks and long-distance hiking stages

At 5.1 kilometres and about 1 hour 20 minutes, the “Tour d’Érigné” is the shorter of the two circular walks. “Mûrs côté Aubance” covers 7.6 kilometres and takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes. The difference is 2.5 kilometres and around 50 minutes of walking time. This lets you weigh up the routes based on their specific distances and time requirements. Mûrs côté Aubance also has a described landscape: the trail passes through vineyards, woodland paths and the countryside near Mûrs-Erigné and its hamlets. If you take the character of the surroundings into account as well as the distance, that gives you another basis for choosing.

For a long-distance hike, the endpoint and the time available for the day are other points of comparison. Stage six of the GR®3 from Mûrs-Erigné to Rochefort-sur-Loire is 16.8 kilometres long and is listed as a one-day hike. Stage five of the GR® de Pays Coteaux du Layon et de la Loire runs from Mûrs-Erigné to Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné; it covers 21.3 kilometres and takes approximately 5 hours 20 minutes. In both cases, the destination is included in the route information, while stage five also has an approximate duration. The stages can therefore be compared by distance, destination and stated time frame for the day—a different consideration from choosing between the two circular walks. If you have a specific amount of time available, these details provide a concrete comparison of the route types.

Vineyards, river landscape and history

The landscape also offers different perspectives. La Roche de Mûrs combines vineyards with a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire riverbed. Here, viticulture and the river landscape come together. On stage five of the GR® de Pays Coteaux du Layon et de la Loire, the trail starts from Mûrs-Erigné and enters the wine-growing area and wine appellation zone of the Coteaux du Layon. There, wine is represented by a named wine-growing area and appellation zone. Together with the vineyards, woodland paths and countryside of Mûrs côté Aubance, this shows the theme in different ways: as part of a circular walking landscape and as an area reached along a long-distance hiking stage.

The former Port Sablier sand harbour connects the landscape with a specific history of river use: the extraction of Loire sand began there in the 19th century. This extends the focus beyond wine-growing and trails to the river’s use as a source of raw materials. The digital discovery trail “En quête de plantes, vertige de la botanique” offers a different theme. It uses the free Baludik app; its title alone points to plants and botany as a distinct focus. If you would like to choose a themed experience rather than focusing only on kilometres, this trail is another option alongside the circular walks and long-distance hiking stages.
