Coron offers two distinct themes to help you plan your trip: historic and cultural monuments, and named hiking routes. Notable features include a historic monument, a reconstructed windmill and a castle complex with a tower in ruins. There are eight named hiking trails; two are described in detail, with a circular route and distance. This lets you decide whether to focus more on history and architecture during your stay, or on a particular route.
Cultural history at the menhir, windmill and castle
The menhir La Pierre des Hommes was classified as a historic monument on 31 December 1889. Two different dates tell the story of the Moulin à vent de la Noue-Ronde windmill: it was reconstructed in 1890 as a grain mill in the form of an elevated tower windmill, and it has been protected as a historic monument since 1 August 1975. The dates therefore refer to different stages—the reconstruction of the building and its later protected status. The windmill is privately owned.
The Château de la Roche des Aubiers in Coron is also privately owned. The site is described as a fortified complex with a square tower in ruins. Those interested in historic architecture can consider its surviving architectural form alongside the history of the windmill and menhir as distinct aspects of the cultural heritage, without grouping them under a single architectural theme.
For history enthusiasts, the Chapelle de Vertu is a recommended detour, especially if you are interested in the Vendée Wars.
Choose hiking trails by distance
There are eight named hiking trails in Coron. The route list may change; the names can help guide your choice:
- Sentier les vallons et les étangs
- Sentier des Bois
- Sentier du Pont au Château
- Sentier en longeant le Lys
- Sentier du Bocage Ă Coron
- Sentier autour de l'Oratoire
- Sentier du Rosaire Ă la Chapelle
- Promenons-nous Ă Coron: Autour de Coron
Two circular routes offer a clear comparison by distance. Promenons-nous Ă Coron: Autour de Coron is 4.5 kilometres long. The Sentier du Bocage Ă Coron covers 17.3 kilometres and is marked in green. The longer loop is therefore almost four times as long as the shorter one. If you want to start your hiking plans by considering distance, this difference is a clear point of reference. Check route details before setting out, as they may change.
The Base de loisirs de l'Ecoterie, a point of interest along the Sentier des Bois, has ponds and play facilities.
Decide what to focus on during your stay
For a stay focused on cultural history, the buildings offer a range of distinct features: the menhir’s classification, the history of the reconstructed windmill and the ruined square tower of the fortified complex. If you are particularly interested in the Vendée Wars, you could consider the Chapelle de Vertu as a recommended detour. For hiking, you can start by comparing the two circular routes described by distance, or choose a theme of your own from the eight named trails.
These interests do not have to become a fixed day-by-day itinerary. First decide which details interest you most and which route fits your plans; then you can arrange your visits and hikes accordingly. If you would like to combine culture and hiking, consider Coron as a destination when looking for a holiday rental.
