In Saffré, you can choose between two routes based on their destinations: the Sentier de l’Isac et de Bout de Bois leads to the Bout de Bois body of water, while the Sentier du Château de Saffré leads to the château and its landscaped park. Both paths are intended for hiking and cycling. This gives you a choice between a route focused on the canal and water, and one focused on the château and park.
Canal paths and routes to the Château
The Sentier de l’Isac et de Bout de Bois follows the towpath of the Canal de Nantes à Brest. From the ponds of Saffré, the path heads towards the canal and passes through woodland and bocage landscapes; it also reaches the Bout de Bois body of water. The canal, woodland sections and bocage give this route several distinct features. If you would rather make the Château your destination, you can take the Sentier du Château de Saffré, which leads to the building and its landscaped park. This path is also intended for hiking and cycling. The choice between the two therefore depends mainly on whether you would rather focus on the canal and Bout de Bois, or on the château and park.
At the Bout de Bois site, there are opportunities for sports, recreation, fishing, picnics, children’s games and walks. The different activities offer different ways to spend time outdoors, without implying any particular route or length of stay. Route conditions and facilities may change; check the latest information before your visit.
A landscape of different environments
The municipality of Saffré is characterised in the west by a plain with the Isac valley and in the east by a plateau with the Forêt de Saffré. This west–east division gives the landscape two distinct sides: the valley and plain on one hand, and the plateau and forest on the other. It provides a useful framework for understanding the municipality’s natural features without combining its different places into a single route.
Les Perrières de Saffré offers another view of local habitats. The area includes former wet depressions from earlier limestone quarrying, natural meadows, grasslands beginning to become overgrown with shrubs, and various wooded areas. It is home to rare and uncommon plants, including notable orchid populations. Information about species and populations may change over time. The INPN record dated 12 June 2024 lists Les Perrières as a continental ZNIEFF type 1; ecological classifications and inventories may be revised.
The ponds of the Château de Saffré are also ecologically rich. In the 2000s, a wetland and meadow area was restored. Several plant species, numerous dragonflies, a carnivorous plant, and dozens of birds and amphibians can be found around the ponds. The species you may see can vary by season. Alongside its paths, Saffré therefore offers a connection with nature centred on habitats and wildlife observation.
Château history and other places to visit
The Château de Saffré has a history spanning nine centuries. The Sentier du Château connects this historical heritage with a specific destination and the landscaped park. The Maquis de Saffré memorial offers a different focus: its interpretation trail leads from the monument to the oratory, and the memorial can be visited daily without a guide.
The Médiathèque Le Château is open year-round and is located on the ground floor of the Château de Saffré. It is therefore also inside the château, while the Sentier du Château leads to the building and into the landscaped park. During a stay in Saffré, you can choose from several distinct themes: paths along the canal, a route to the château, nature observation at the ponds and in the various habitats, and a visit to the memorial.
