A former quarry, Roche-Ballue has been transformed into a local recreation area. Together with trails through varied landscapes and cultural offerings ranging from theatre to European traditional music, Bouguenais offers different ways to shape your stay. You can plan around nature, history and performing arts as separate interests rather than combining them into a fixed daily itinerary.

Roche-Ballue and trails through varied landscapes

On the “Autour de la Roche Ballue” circular trail, wetlands, sandy embankments, a causeway that can be flooded and a former quarry alternate along the route. The trail is 10.7 kilometres long—a useful reference point when planning how much time to allow for your outing. Trail surfaces may vary; check conditions before setting out.

Roche-Ballue is home to an ornithological observation centre. A viewpoint trail offers views over the site. These provide two different ways to explore nature: birdwatching and taking in the view from the lookout. Before travelling, also check seasonal access conditions. Roche-Ballue also has a bathing area. If you plan to use it, check the current conditions in advance; supervision and opening hours may change.

Natural areas and trails along the Loire

The Ville-au-Denis natural site covers 14 hectares and includes oak stands, impressive sequoias and a pond. A municipal notice dated 18 August 2022 describes the pond as a place for sustainable fishing, subject to an agreement with the city of Bouguenais. If you are considering fishing, check the local arrangements in advance.

The “Loire aval” section of the Étoile verte comprises three trails between Bouguenais and Le Pellerin for walks along the banks of the Loire. This is different from the circular trail at Roche-Ballue: here, you can choose from three Loire-side trails, while the circular trail has a specified length of 10.7 kilometres. Check the route details before setting out.

Culture, art and history

Piano'cktail in Bouguenais presents theatre, puppetry, music, dance and circus arts. Its programme also includes performances for young audiences and conference debates. The range spans different forms of performance as well as discussion and debate. Le Nouveau Pavillon in Bouguenais and the wider Nantes metropolitan area focuses on cultural creation shaped by European traditional music.

Port-Lavigne is freely accessible. In the 17th century, it developed into a working port associated with the trade in goods from the Pays de Retz, especially salt. Another artistic connection is the “De Port Lavigne à la Pierre Blanche” trail: as far as Roche-Ballue, it is lined with “The Settlers” sculptures by artist Sarah Sze.

The attractions offer different themes to explore on a trip to Bouguenais; it is best to plan the specific order of your outings around the places you choose and their respective visiting conditions.
