Tourlaville combines architectural and garden history with walking trails and an area for several sports. Château des Ravalet and its park give the destination a cultural and historical focus; coastal walks, mountain bike trails and orienteering offer other ways to experience the landscape. You can tailor your stay to the mix of gardens, culture and activity you want.
Château des Ravalet: architectural and garden history
Jean II de Ravalet had Château des Ravalet built on a former medieval site. The Château estate has been classified as a “Monument historique” since 1996. The 18-hectare landscape park was redesigned in 1872 as a blend of English and French garden styles. This combination of two garden styles shapes the park’s history.
Parc du château des Ravalet is home to one of the few surviving 19th-century rotunda greenhouses in Normandy. The park received the “Jardin remarquable” designation in 2004. The estate’s classification and the park’s designation therefore represent different aspects of the ensemble: its heritage history and recognition of the garden.
Circular trail and coastal section
Les chemins du Becquet is classified as a red route, links landscape and coast, and starts and finishes at Château des Ravalet. The coastal section of the GR 223 from Tourlaville to Querqueville is a moderately difficult 16.6-kilometre hike; the stated duration is three hours. This coastal trail is part of the GR 223, known as the Tour du Cotentin.
When choosing between the two trails, their routes are the key distinction: Les chemins du Becquet is a circular walk starting and finishing at the Château, while a distance and duration are given for the GR section. This makes it possible to factor the hike, with its clearly stated time commitment, into your day’s plans without mistaking the circular walk for a route with the same type of distance information.
Sports and nature area and Parc Bagatelle
Lande Saint-Gabriel is a 30-hectare natural sports and nature area overlooking Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the sea. Marked mountain bike trails are classified by difficulty as blue, red and black. There is also a trial course and orienteering courses. The colour grades apply to the mountain bike trails; the other courses offer different activities.
Parc Bagatelle offers a different atmosphere: this peaceful, densely planted park is bordered by the River Trottebec. Several lawns are suitable for picnics or relaxing; there is also a children’s playground. The two green spaces are therefore quite distinct: Lande Saint-Gabriel brings together sports facilities and views, while Bagatelle offers lawns and a park described as peaceful.
Tourlaville is therefore suited to a variety of day-trip focuses, from exploring the cultural and historical significance of the Château and its gardens to enjoying marked walking and sports trails. The walks can be distinguished by their route type and, for the GR section, by the stated duration. Those wishing to spend more time outdoors will find not only the Château’s landscape park but also the differently styled park at Bagatelle and the expansive grounds of Lande Saint-Gabriel.
