In Sortosville, sacred art is connected to specific local landmarks. The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is protected in its entirety; other works of art can be distinguished by their location, depictions and dates. There is also the Croix de Gotot on Chemin de Gotot, the Sinope stream that separates Sortosville from Saint-Cyr, and a historic trail programme. This can help you decide whether church art, local history and these other points of interest suit your travel interests.

Church and Sacred Art

The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is protected as a historic monument in its entirety; it was listed on 18 October 1971. The statue of Sainte Catherine d'Alexandrie is located on the south side of the church’s main altarpiece. It dates from the 15th century and is classified as a protected historic object; its classification took place on 5 October 1923. The two dates refer to different protected objects: 1971 for the church as a whole, and 1923 for the individual statue. The altarpiece, the structure behind the altar, also provides a precise location for the figure.

The bas-relief Scenes from the Life of Saint Célerin is in the nave, high up on the southern pillar of the chancel arch. The nave is the main lengthwise space of a church; the chancel arch marks the arch at the transition to the choir. This makes it easy to distinguish the locations of the two works: the Sainte Catherine is on the south side of the altarpiece, while the relief is on the southern pillar of the chancel arch.

The Croix de Gotot stands on Chemin de Gotot. It dates from the 17th century and has been listed as a protected movable cultural object since 11 December 1980. Its two sides can also be distinguished: Christ on the cross is depicted on the front, and the Virgin and Child on the back. In addition to its location and age, its imagery offers another way to appreciate the work: two different religious motifs appear on the front and back of the same cross.

A statue of an unidentified holy bishop dates from the 16th century. The two statuettes of Saint CĂ´me and Saint Damien date from the 15th century. A green liturgical vestment set from the 18th century is also among the sacred artworks. It comprises a chasuble, stole, maniple and chalice veil. Figures and liturgical textiles are thus found side by side; among these examples, the dates range from the 15th to the 18th century.

Local Connections and Historic Trail Routes

The Sinope stream separates Sortosville from Saint-Cyr. This geographical connection complements the details about the church and artworks with a specific link between the two places. It offers another perspective on Sortosville, without requiring the cultural objects to be joined into a single route.

A trail programme is also associated with Sortosville: in 2017, La Sortosvillaise included routes of 28, 19 and 12 kilometres. The distances differ considerably; the 28-kilometre route was more than twice as long as the 12-kilometre route, while the 19-kilometre route fell in between. The programme is dated to 2017. These three route lengths therefore relate to this historic event, not to a current event listing.
