Geology and Hiking Trails

The abandoned Cambrian Poudingue pourpré quarry is a geological feature of Saint-Vigor-des-Monts. It lies in a conglomerate bed that forms a rise in the terrain; some piles of blocks from the quarrying period are still visible. These remnants show the site's former use, while its geological history goes back much further: the Cambrian Poudingue pourpré documents early Cambrian deposits associated with the erosion of the Cadomian mountain chain. At this same site, visible traces of quarrying stand alongside a much older history of the Earth.

The GR de Pays “Tour du Bocage Virois” and the GR “Traces des fondeurs de cloches” cross the quarry site. Anyone wishing to explore the geological site as part of a hike can use these two routes as a guide. The circular trail “Sur les hauteurs de Saint-Vigor-des-Monts” starts at the church square, is marked in blue and is followed clockwise. The Circuit des Bruyères (circuit 6) starts in Saint-Vigor-des-Monts and is classified as a moderate hike. This gives you different points of reference when choosing your route: the starting point, trail markings and direction of travel for the circular trail, and the moderate classification for the Circuit des Bruyères.

The Table d'orientation has three orientation panels illustrated with enamelled lava. They help hikers find their bearings in the bocage; the Table d'orientation also offers views of the landscape. The site thus serves a practical purpose for navigation while also providing a view of the surrounding landscape.

Church, Calvary and Local History

The church of Saint-Vigor-des-Monts dates partly from the 16th century. Inside the church, you can discover elaborately decorated tombstones. At the Calvaire Sainte-Marie-des-Monts, the steps are made from former tombstones; the calvary commemorates the reunification of the parishes of Saint-Vigor and Sainte-Marie-des-Monts in 1830. The church and calvary offer two different historical perspectives: here, tombstones are elaborately decorated; there, the steps are made from former tombstones and recall the union of the parishes.

The former bakery is also part of the village's history. It belonged to the former rectory, which dates from 1722, and was completely renovated in 2002. The two dates mark different milestones: 1722 refers to the rectory, while 2002 refers to the bakery's renovation. A recurring event is the bread festival, held every May in Saint-Vigor-des-Monts. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event date.

Highlights for Your Stay

When planning your stay, you can choose between hiking and geology on the one hand, and local history on the other. The geological site and the hiking trails that cross it form the first focus; the church, calvary and former bakery make up the second. The bread festival adds an annual event held in May.
