Saint Planchers brings together two distinctive themes for trip planning: historic buildings and rural trails. The Prieuré de l'Oiselière, the Église Saint-Pancrace and the Grange à dîme de la Table each offer their own architectural or heritage features. There are also 28 km of rural trails, including 17 km of hiking trails. You can therefore plan your stay around individual buildings and their history, set aside time to walk, or include both interests in your plans.
Buildings and heritage protection
Part of the Prieuré de l'Oiselière is protected as a historic monument; it was listed on 27 November 1989. At the Église Saint-Pancrace, monument status has applied since 1978 to a group comprising the high altar, side altars and rood beam. The two dates refer to different things: 1989 to the partial protection of the priory, and 1978 to the group of furnishings mentioned. Thus, at the priory, part of a building is the focus, while at the church, specific furnishings are protected as a group. For a cultural and historical perspective, this offers a useful comparison between heritage protection for a building and the classification of its furnishings.
The Grange à dîme de la Table remains in its hamlet and is in excellent condition. Check the building's condition before your visit. The building is also known as « Chevalier des touches ». The Grange features a round-arched portal with a segmental arch, a tall opening to the attic and buttresses on the west side. The portal marks the entrance, the opening leads to the attic, and the buttresses are projecting supports on the west side. These features offer a concrete look at different parts of the building: the entrance, the attic area and the exterior.
Trails and historical information
Saint Planchers has 28 km of rural trails for walking, including 17 km of hiking trails. The 17 km are included in the 28 km and are not additional trail distance. This distinction gives you a general sense of the trail length; if you are planning a specific hike, check the local route information for the individual trail.
Along the trails in Saint Planchers, small signs from the « Nature & Loisirs » association provide information about historical events. This means historical information accompanies the walk, rather than relating only to individual buildings or furnishings. If you enjoy learning about cultural topics while walking, the signs give your time on the trail its own focus.
Two ways to explore
When planning your trip, you can choose between two kinds of experiences: the buildings highlight heritage and architectural details, while the trails combine exercise with historical information. Choose based on whether you would rather look at architectural forms or learn about history on a walk. Both approaches can be planned as different parts of your trip.
