Flower vases from Mourot, now Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou, are often called “wedding vases” because of their decorative rings; each pot always has four rings. This design motif offers a way into the village’s pottery history. Together with the Manoir de Gonneville, ecclesiastical artworks, and an interpretive walking trail, they offer different perspectives on architecture, craftsmanship, and landscape.

Architectural history and protected artworks

The Manoir de Gonneville is a historic manor house in Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou. The manor’s façades and roofs, as well as those of the outbuildings enclosing the courtyard, are protected as historic monuments. A decree dated 29 August 1977 also protected the fireplace in the main room on the ground floor of the Henri IV pavilion, the fireplace in the right-hand room of the 16th-century building, and the dovecote. This means the protection extends from the exterior structures to specific interior features and the dovecote. The building can therefore be described in terms that go beyond its façades: individual rooms and features are also part of its protected heritage.

The statue “Notre Dame de Montront” was listed as a protected cultural object on 7 October 1935. The Église Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, carved around 1300. The church also contains a holy water font made from Néhou terracotta in the 19th century, depicting an angel holding a shell. The wooden sculpture and terracotta object differ in material, date, and subject. These details add an artisanal perspective to the architectural history, distinct from the protected features of the manor house.

The pottery history of Mourot and Néhou

The flower vases from Néhou were made in Mourot, now Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou. They are often called “wedding vases” because of their decorative rings; each pot always has four rings. The pottery centre of the northern Cotentin, to which Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou belonged, is associated with a total of 24 kilns, workshops, or potteries. This figure applies to the centre, including other localities, not to Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou alone.

In Néhou, the zoomorphic jug known as a “pot cochon” was an emblematic product of the Hamel pottery family. It was made from the second half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. The jug was made of brown, grainy clay, and a salt glaze gave its surface a sheen. With the “wedding vases,” the focus is on the four rings and the name associated with them; with the “pot cochon,” it is on the animal shape, material, and glaze. The two examples illustrate different craft features without describing the same type of pottery.

A walking trail exploring heritage and bocage countryside

Renovated and inaugurated in 2025, the Sentier des Eoliennes is a walking trail for discovering the surroundings of the commune of Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou. It presents the history and natural and built heritage of the commune and its surroundings. The trail features six educational and interpretive panels; two additional panels introduce the biodiversity of the bocage landscape. The trail therefore covers local history as well as nature and the built environment.

For planning your trip, the trail offers a different focus from the individual historic sites: it explores heritage and landscape in the context of their surroundings, while the information about the manor, church, and pottery highlights specific buildings and objects of art. Consider whether you would rather spend your time on these specific architectural and craft details or on the themes of the Sentier des Eoliennes. If you are looking for a holiday rental, this focus can help guide the rest of your stay planning.
