Gouvets offers hikers a variety of route profiles: the GRP® 5 includes the area in a longer-distance trail with two named stages, while the circular routes Autour de Gouvets and La randonnée des Bruyéres provide their own details for comparison. When choosing a route, you can compare distance, stated duration and elevation gain with the indicated difficulty levels. A nature-focused route and local traditions offer further perspectives on Gouvets.

Hiking routes with different profiles

The GRP® 5 “sur les Traces des Fondeurs de Cloches” is 94 kilometres long overall and marked in yellow and red. One stage leads from Villedieu-les-Poêles to Gouvets, and another from Gouvets to Hambye. This means Gouvets features in two stage connections on the long-distance trail: once as a destination and once as a starting point. The 94 kilometres refer to the entire GRP® 5; the stage details show how the area fits into its route.

The Autour de Gouvets circular route starts at the church square in Gouvets and is marked in yellow. It passes through the Gouvette valley. The route includes an orientation board and a discovery trail focusing on fauna and flora, giving nature study a place alongside hiking. The loop is 19 kilometres long, rated moderate, and listed as taking 4 hours and 45 minutes, with 330 metres of ascent.

La randonnée des Bruyéres offers another circular walk: it is 15.5 kilometres long and rated difficult, with a stated duration of four hours and 325 metres of ascent. In a direct comparison of the figures, it is 3.5 kilometres shorter than Autour de Gouvets; the stated duration is 45 minutes shorter, and the ascent differs by five metres. The difficulty ratings also differ: Autour de Gouvets is moderate, while La randonnée des Bruyéres is difficult. This lets you weigh duration, distance and rating together, rather than basing your choice on distance alone.

La randonnée des Bruyéres starts at the Vallée de la Vire service and rest area on the N 175. The route description dates from 2014; check the trail conditions before setting out.

Amenities and local traditions

The Aire de la Vallée de la Vire on the A84 has a petrol station, restaurant, bar and grocery shop selling regional products. Toilets and showers are also available. Parking is available for cars, motorhomes and lorries.

Local history also offers a perspective on Gouvets that differs from the hiking trails. Until relatively recently, the Presse, Lechevallier and Eudes families maintained the community tradition of the Pomme d'Or de Gouvets competition by selling their cider, though on a much smaller scale than in the past. At the Église Sainte-Marthe, a religious tradition is associated with Sainte Marthe: she is invoked to ease children's intestinal pain.

For a hiking trip, you can start your accommodation search by considering the type of route you have chosen: the GRP® 5 offers stages to plan around, while the two circular routes each have their own profile. If you are looking for hotels in Gouvets, first consider whether you want to focus on a stage hike or a circular walk.
