Gourfaleur offers several different discoveries: a Vélorail ride along the Vire, the Église Notre-Dame with its stained-glass windows, and traces of local architectural history. Art in the Vire Valley is another possible activity. You can easily tailor your itinerary to the time available: the ride has a specified duration, while the church, historic buildings and artworks appeal to different interests.

Ride the Vélorail along the Vire

The Vélorail runs from Condé-sur-Vire to Gourfaleur, along the Vire and its towpath. The ride offers a chance to discover the Vire Valley. The round trip is about 11 kilometres long and takes approximately an hour and a half. These details give you a specific time frame for planning; allow for the round trip as a separate activity. Check before travelling to see whether the route is operating.

The Vélorail is accessible to wheelchair users. Ramps are available to secure wheelchairs on the rail bikes. This information is just as relevant to your planning as the approximate duration: the accessibility and ramps apply to the Vélorail ride.

Church, stained glass and architectural history

The Église Notre-Dame de Gourfaleur and its stained-glass windows are part of the local heritage. The church was built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 19th century. A notable architectural detail at the west portal is its round-arched archivolt made of Caen stone. An archivolt follows the curve of a portal arch and frames its rounded shape. The nave, the church’s longitudinal main section, also contains a panelled roof structure dating from the late 15th century. The construction date, later remodelling and roof structure thus point to different historical layers of the building.

Another detail is the chancel window titled “Ange gardien, saint Michel et l’archange Gabriel.” It depicts the guardian angel, Saint Michael and the Archangel Gabriel. The secondary scenes show a guardian angel rescuing a child from the flames, the apparition of Saint Michael to Saint Aubert, and the Annunciation. If you are interested in religious imagery, you can look at the window’s motifs as well as the architecture.

More art and historic buildings

Almost twenty sculptures can be discovered along the Voie verte between the Pont de Gourfaleur in Bourgvallées and the Pont de Pont-Farcy in Tessy-Bocage. This is a different focus on art from the church’s stained-glass windows: here, you encounter works along a route, whereas individual depictions in the Église Notre-Dame form part of the church interior.

The Festival des Bords de Vire is devoted to contemporary art in the Vire Valley. It takes place every two years; dates vary from one edition to the next. Site-specific works enter into dialogue with their surroundings. If you would like to plan your trip around an edition, check the specific dates before arranging your stay.

The Château du Béron, dating from the 17th century, and the 16th-century Manoir de la Cour are also among Gourfaleur’s historic buildings. The Manoir de Saint-Lubin is another local heritage site worth seeing. Their different dates offer a brief comparison of architectural history.

A stop along the way

Le Comptoir de Gourfaleur is close to the towpath and the Vélorail, and is particularly suited to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. If you plan to stop there, check the latest service information in advance.
