Doville brings together striking landscapes and traces of cultural history. From Mont de Doville, the view stretches far across the Cotentin; the Sangsurière et de l'Adriennerie National Nature Reserve is home to active lowland peat bogs and botanical diversity. Other highlights include the medieval Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel and the former guardhouse. When planning your visit, you can decide whether views, moorland or history should be the focus of your stay.

Panoramic Views and Nature at Mont de Doville

Mont de Doville offers 360-degree panoramic views across the Cotentin. You can see the bocage countryside, marshes and sea; on the horizon, the view even reaches the island of Jersey. The vegetation also shapes the character of the hill: heath and gorse are typical here. Views and plant life thus offer different highlights, without limiting your appreciation of the landscape to just one aspect.

There is a car park, a picnic area and an orientation board on the hill. There is also a discovery trail with educational information panels. The Sentier d'interprétation du Mont de Doville is signposted from the D900 between La Haye-du-Puits and Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte.

Moorland and Botanical Diversity

The Sangsurière et de l'Adriennerie National Nature Reserve in Doville is one of the last active lowland peat bogs. Its peat layer is more than ten metres thick. Visitors can discover 230 different botanical species in the reserve, including around 50 protected or rare species. Figures for the botanical inventory may be updated. The reserve therefore offers a different nature-focused experience from the hill: here, the focus is on the peat bog and plant diversity, while the hill offers panoramic views, heath and gorse.

At the entrance to the nature reserve, there is a car park, a picnic area, a purpose-built viewpoint and information panels. Guided tours of the Parc des Marais are available by reservation. Visitor facilities and tour offerings may change; check in advance if they are important to your plans. This makes it easy to decide whether you are mainly interested in the landscape and its botanical richness or would like to plan a tour that requires a reservation.

The Chapel and the History of the Cotentin

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel is Doville's former medieval parish church and is dedicated to Saint Martin. It is open year-round and free to visit; check access conditions before your trip. The chapel is also associated with a local legend from 1710, in which a goat locks a wolf inside the chapel. The story is part of local tradition and should be understood as a tale dating from 1710, not as a recurring event. In addition to its former role as a parish church, the chapel also offers a connection to local legend.

Another historical landmark is Doville's former guardhouse. Since 31 March 1992, the building in its entirety has been protected as a historic monument and is considered evidence of the defence of the Cotentin during the Ancien Régime. This presents two distinct themes: the chapel combines medieval church history with a local legend, while the guardhouse recalls the defensive history of the Cotentin. Together with the landscape and nature highlights, these sites allow you to explore Doville according to different interests without conflating their individual significance.

When choosing what to focus on, it helps to understand the difference between the hill and the nature reserve: at the hill, the highlights are the panoramic views and characteristic heath and gorse vegetation; in the reserve, they are the deep peat layer and botanical inventory. Those more interested in cultural history will find two further points of interest in the chapel and the guardhouse. This clear distinction makes it easier to decide which aspect of Doville you would particularly like to explore on your trip.
