Boisroger combines a notable collection of church art with a walking route linking the coast and the village. At its heart is the Église Saint-Nicolas; the Circuit 6 route follows the GR 223 along the coast before heading inland to Boisroger. Near Gouville-sur-Mer are a long sandy beach, dunes and the Cabane Vauban. The Gîte de Boisroger is in a former rectory. This lets you weigh local history, coastal scenery and accommodation as different priorities for your stay.

Church Art and History in Boisroger

A church is documented in Boisroger in 1139; it is not certain whether it was the same building as today’s Église Saint-Nicolas. Next to the church is a former Saint-Benoît priory dating from the 12th century. In the church, the northern chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in 1838. These dates distinguish early ecclesiastical history, the neighbouring former priory and a later chapel construction—they do not simply tell the story of a single, unchanged building.

The furnishings and sculptures also mark distinct periods. The altarpiece and tabernacle were made around 1717; the altar and ornaments were restored in 1878 and 1907. The “Saint évêque” statue dates from the 17th century. Another striking work is the protected sculptural group “Saint Roch, l'ange et le chien”: it is made of carved, polychrome-painted limestone. The Église Saint-Nicolas also has Stations of the Cross. Together, these works offer various starting points for exploring art history, from the working of materials and church furnishings to the history of restoration.

The cemetery cross stands southwest of the Église Saint-Nicolas. Its stepped platform, base, shaft and cross appear to have been made from a single block of granite. The details lie both in its stepped construction and in the possibility that it was made from one continuous stone; the latter remains a supposition. If you are planning to visit the inside of the church, check the opening hours in advance.

Walking Trails and Coastal Scenery

Circuit 6 follows the GR 223 along the coast and then heads inland to Boisroger. Its route therefore connects the coastal stretch with the village. Another walking route in Gouville-sur-Mer uses the PR26. Nearby is a six-kilometre-long sandy beach bordered by dunes. The colourful beach huts stand along the dune ridge. The priorities are therefore clearly distinct: in Boisroger, the church and local history take centre stage; in Gouville-sur-Mer, it is the beach, dunes and huts.

The Cabane Vauban in Gouville-sur-Mer also adds a historical dimension to a coastal visit. Built from granite and slate from 1744 onwards, it served as a guardhouse for customs officers. The date “from 1744” indicates when construction began. At the Moulin de Gouville, flour is sold on site during opening hours; availability may vary by season. A visit to the mill shop is therefore a different kind of stop from a beach walk or a look at the history of the guardhouse.

Stay at the Gîte de Boisroger

The Gîte de Boisroger is in a fully renovated former rectory dating from the 19th century. It has five bedrooms, including an accessible bedroom on the ground floor. These details give a concrete sense of the layout without implying any additional amenities or a particular suitability.

When choosing your stay, you can consider two questions separately: should your focus be on the historic and religious details in Boisroger, or would you also like to include the coastal scenery around Gouville-sur-Mer? Circuit 6 connects the village with the coastal stretch; the beach and dunes also give Gouville-sur-Mer its own character. The gîte in the former rectory makes Boisroger itself the base for your stay.
