Benoîtville can be explored from different perspectives: the panorama from La Lande, the art and heritage history of the Église Saint-Pierre, and traces of transport and the local economy in earlier times. If you are choosing a place to stay where landscape and the history of a particular place come together, these themes offer different points of interest.

Panorama, River and Road Connection

At the highest point of La Lande, there is a panorama from which 13 church towers can be seen. This number gives the view a distinctive profile: it takes in several towers rather than just one building. If you would like to take in the landscape and its built landmarks together, this combination is what defines the viewpoint.

The course of the La Diélette also places Benoîtville within the landscape. This 12.6-kilometre coastal river rises in the hills of Grosville, passes through Benoîtville and Tréauville, and flows into the port of Diélette near Flamanville. Its source, course and mouth form a geographical route that extends beyond the village and connects Benoîtville with several named places.

The RD650 offers another point of reference: it passes through Benoîtville and connects Cherbourg with Mont-Saint-Michel. This places the village along a named road connection. For choosing somewhere to stay, this is a separate consideration alongside the panorama and river landscape.

Church Art Spanning Several Periods

Different aspects of the village’s history come together in the Église Saint-Pierre. Its bell tower has been partially protected as a historic monument since 24 January 1947. The church also houses a polychrome statue of the Virgin and Child dating from the 14th or 15th century. It has been protected as a movable object since 1972.

Another statue in the church depicts Saint Fiacrius. It dates from the 16th century; Fiacrius is considered the patron saint of gardeners. There are also 13 panels of stained glass from 1947. The artworks described here therefore span several periods: the Madonna statue is attributed to the 14th or 15th century, Fiacrius to the 16th century, and the stained-glass panels to 1947. Those interested in religious art will find a range of subjects and dates here, rather than just a single point of reference in time.

Crosses and Local History

The Croix Georges now stands set back from the roundabout. It was probably once located directly at the crossroads and served as a landmark before the French Revolution. It bears the dates 1805 and 1862. In the case of this cross, its present location, its presumed former position and its historical function all come into view.

The Croix Cosquet is a cross dated to the 17th century, made from a single block of stone and standing at the junction of the D408 and the road to the dairy. Unlike the Croix Georges, its date and construction are the main points of interest. The two crosses thus offer different ways to explore local landmarks.

The history of the Moulin de Bouillon also recalls the village’s former economy: in 1904, it served as the starting point for establishing a dairy after a dairy cooperative had been founded in Benoistville. The Maison de Benoitville dates from the 17th to 18th centuries. Its date offers another point of reference alongside the 17th-century cross.

A Walking Option to Round Out Your Visit

If you would also like to explore Benoîtville through an activity, you can join the “Entre Diélette et Divette – n°164” walking route along the way at the “Benoistville – La Croix Georges” stop. This offers a specific walking option alongside the themes of church art, crosses and local history. You can decide what to prioritise when making your choice: an interest in art and architectural history, or a walk.
