A visit to the Château de Vascœuil brings together art, literature and garden design. Anyone who visits the park and gardens is exploring the entire estate, which includes the Musée Michelet, the Colombier and the Château with its current exhibition. This combination makes the site appealing to travellers who want to discover the estate’s cultural connections as well as its outdoor spaces. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different elements as more than a list of attractions: the architecture, Michelet’s legacy, the sculptures and the garden design each add something distinctive.

The Colombier, Michelet and outdoor art

The Colombier dates from the 17th century and still has its original wooden framework and a revolving ladder. These preserved details give the building a distinctive architectural character. The Musée Jules Michelet is housed in an outbuilding dating from the 18th century and is dedicated to the historian. The writer’s study offers another connection to Michelet: it has been faithfully reconstructed at the top of the château tower. The museum and the study each offer a different way to explore his story.

Art is displayed in the open air at the Château’s Parc de Sculptures. The gallery features around fifty original works, on permanent display, in bronze, marble, ceramics and mosaic. The different materials offer more than a single way to approach the collection: as you view the works, you encounter a variety of forms and surfaces within the same sculpture park. The Château also holds the Maisons des Illustres designation. It was inaugurated as a Centre d’Art et d’Histoire in 1970.

Two garden styles on the estate

The Château de Vascœuil estate includes a formal French garden, designed in 1774. It also features an English landscape park with meanders in the river, cascades and an oak tree several centuries old. The two garden styles offer different perspectives: the formal garden is characterised by its ordered design, while the landscape park is shaped by its meanders, water and ancient tree. Garden art enthusiasts can experience these differences as a distinctive part of their visit.

The current exhibition is also part of a visit to the Château. As exhibitions change, it is worth checking the current programme in advance if a particular exhibition is an important part of your plans. The park, gardens, Colombier, museum and Château are not presented as separate attractions, but form part of the estate’s overall visitor experience.

Horse rides, hiking trails and a place to eat

There are various ways to enjoy the outdoors. An equestrian gîte offers guided rides on Icelandic horses selected and trained for this activity. As the local offer should be confirmed again before booking, it is best to arrange your ride separately. On foot, you can explore the wider Pays de Vascœuil, which has a wide selection of marked hiking trails maintained by the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre, including PR, GR and GRP routes. They can be used independently, in groups or with a guide or companion. For specific routes and their availability, ask the local tourist office.

Choosing between a horse ride and a hike also depends on the type of activity you are looking for: the riding offer is guided and uses trained Icelandic horses, while the hiking network provides different types of trails across the wider Pays. These remain two distinct options rather than being combined into a single route.

The Château also houses the La Cascade restaurant and tea room. Groups are welcomed for lunch by reservation. The offering includes a Norman brunch, a Norman “Goût-thé” set menu or a refreshments break on the terrace beside the water staircase. If you plan to stop here, check the menu and opening times in advance, as both may change.
