Saint-Pierre-du-Val can be explored through its historic buildings and two challenging routes. Cultural landmarks include two churches, the ruins of the Château de Saint-Pierre and the Croix aux Chiens. There are also two routes: an 11-kilometre walking trail and a 37-kilometre cycling loop. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the activities: both routes are rated difficult, but they differ in distance and mode of travel.

Churches, castle ruins and a monolithic cross

The parish church of Notre-Dame is the church of the former commune of Notre-Dame-du-Val. Its choir dates from the 11th or 12th century. This date applies to the choir, not to the church building as a whole. The church’s former association with the commune and the dating of a specific architectural feature can therefore be understood as two separate historical details.

The Église Saint-Pierre offers a different perspective. It is located in the green valley of the Vilaine, a small tributary of the Seine estuary, and is built of flint and limestone rubble. Unlike the dating of the Notre-Dame choir, the focus here is on the construction materials and the setting.

Today, the ruins of the medieval keep remain at the Château de Saint-Pierre. The Croix aux Chiens is a monolithic cross, probably carved from a menhir in the 18th or 19th century. Monolithic means that a monument is made from a single stone. A menhir is an upright stone; this probable interpretation describes how such a stone might have been made into a cross.

The chronology spans the choir, dating from the 11th or 12th century, the medieval keep and the cross, which is thought to have been created in the 18th or 19th century. These dates relate to different historic structures and are not all equally certain: a specific period is given for the choir, while the cross’s origins remain uncertain.

Walking or cycling

The “Sentier les 3 Vallées” is a difficult 11.0-kilometre walking trail in Saint-Pierre-du-Val. The route alternates between woodland, bocage hedgerows and open plains. It also crosses the Vilaine via a footbridge. Bocage refers to a landscape divided by hedgerows; on this route, it lies alongside woodland and plains. The trail can therefore be described both by its length and by its changing landscapes and bridge crossing.

The “Boucle 1 Balade en bord de Seine” cycling loop starts in Saint-Pierre-du-Val and is rated difficult. It follows the voie verte to the Pont de Normandie. The listed distance is 37.0 kilometres, with a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes and an elevation gain of 112 metres. It is considerably longer than the walking trail; the stated duration and elevation gain provide additional details for planning.

When choosing between the activities, therefore, do not focus solely on their shared “difficult” rating: they involve different modes of travel and their route lengths differ considerably. The cycling loop also has a stated duration and elevation gain to help you plan. Check the latest route details and conditions before setting out.
