Pîtres lies at the confluence of the Andelle and Seine. A mill, diversion canal, port and historic navigable stretch reveal the town’s history through its waterways; other points of interest include the Edict of 864, Notre-Dame Church and the GR® 2. Those wishing to combine culture and outdoor activities can consider these as different focuses for their stay.

Rivers, a Mill and Layers of History

The Edict of Pîtres, issued in 864, reformed the currency; Notre-Dame Church dates from the 10th century. A currency reform and a religious building thus stand side by side as distinct historical reference points.

The official heritage record documents the construction of the Sainte-Hélène grain mill and its diversion canal; the entry is dated 13 October 1804. The mill is in the Sainte-Hélène district on the Andelle and is a private residence. Its hydraulic waterwheel is still there, but is in poor condition.

The former navigation route can also be traced on the map: the historic navigable stretch of the Andelle extended for 3 km from the Sainte-Hélène weir near Pîtres to its confluence with the Seine. The small historic port, also known as Port de l’Andelle, was located at the mouth of the Andelle on the left bank; most of its port infrastructure has disappeared.

The historical timeline therefore runs from the 9th century to the early 19th century. Currency reform, the church and the use of water offer distinct ways to explore local history; the river connects the mill, canal, port and former navigation route in particular.

Market, Long-Distance Trail and Trail Race

During the market period listed for 2026, the weekly market takes place every Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check the times locally again before your visit.

The GR® 2 “Au fil de la Seine” is a long-distance walking trail from Rouen to Vernon; Pîtres lies along its route.

The Trail des Deux Amants also starts in Pîtres, but differs from the GR® 2 as an event with several formats. These include trail races of 17, 25 and 53 km, night trails of 16 and 21 km, and a 14 km Nordic walk. This makes it possible to consider a long-distance walking trail and an event with different route options as distinct reasons for travelling. Routes and formats may vary from one edition to another, so check the date and programme for the relevant edition before making plans.
